六朝時代（公元229-589年）
公元三至六世紀，吳，東晉，宋，齊，梁，陳六國相繼在南京建都，史稱“六朝”。疆域北達江淮，南至交廣，西抵巴蜀，東臨滄海。相對北方地區的戰爭頻仍，經濟窒息，文化衰退，六朝則社會較為穩定。北方士人和勞動民眾大量南遷，江南經濟得到進一步開發，逐漸趕上並超過黃河流域，中國經濟重心南移，六朝時期科學，技術，思想，藝術領域皆取得輝煌成就，在漢末戰亂裡瀕於毀滅的漢文化傳統得以保存和發展，開創了風采綽約，意義深遠的六朝文化。

六朝古都
公元211年，孫權將治所自京城（今江蘇鎮江)遷至秣陵(今江蘇南京），次年改名建業。其間兩次短暫徙都武昌（今湖北鄂城)外，建業始終是孫吳政權的首都。西晉末因避愍帝司馬鄴之諱，改名建康。317年晉室南遷, 又為東晉首都。而後宋、 齊、梁、陳，均立都建康。六朝以建康(建業)為都， 前後約330年。隨著農業的發展，手工業和商業的興起，城市的興建和擴展，以及科技、文化、藝術 的進步，建康城以其政治、經濟、文化中心的重要地位與輻射能力，匯聚了南北方大批傑出人才，吸引了許多異國使臣客商，成為國際上屈指可數的大都市。

開發江南
六朝時期，南北經濟狀況差異顯著。北方因戰亂等原因，農業生產幾經起落，原來處於全國經濟中心的地位逐漸喪失。江南地區，土地肥沃，資源豐富，社會秩序相對穩定。北人避難南渡，帶來先進的生產工具和農業技術，南方農業得以較快發展，造船、冶煉、造紙、制瓷、織錦等手工業也取得重大進步。全國經濟重心出現南移趨勢，形成江南經濟的新格局。
