最近在美剧里看到一句台词
I think we should try to buy some more time.
我想我们应该尽力买更多时间？
字面翻译是这个意思
但时间真的可以买到吗？
当然不是啦！
字幕翻译是：我想我们得设法拖延时间。
所以buy time = 拖延时间
而不是字面意思「买时间」~
接下来让我们接着看和时间有关的表达方法~

in the nick of time 表示及时，在关键时刻，紧要关头nick 既可以做英文名字，还可以当做一个名词，表示缺痕，小裂口。所以in the nick of time直接翻译过来就是在时间的裂痕中！ 所以in the nick of time就表示出一种在紧急关头，刻不容缓的情形。We got there just in the nick of time. A minute later and she'd have left.我们到的正是时候，再晚一分钟她可能就离开了。此外，in time，just in time与in the nick of time一样都是表示及时在最后时刻的意思~知识延伸
buy time类似的单词词组就是所谓的“俚语”，也称“俗语”，英语是母语的人用词会比较地道。
比如“浪费时间，打发时间”，我们常说waste time，而老外会说kill time ，用动词kill （杀死）显得更加形象生动；
如果说“开夜车，工作到深夜”，我们只会说work hard till midnight，而老外会说burn the midnight oil 。
解析：Burn是燃烧，midnight是半夜，oil就是油。 以前用油灯照明，如果有人在深夜还烧着灯油，即表示那个人仍在努力的埋头苦干。burn the midnight oil由此而来。
例句：
I'm not ready for the test tomorrow.
I guess I'll have to burn the midnight oil.
