Blingdynasty: Baselworld
In 1917, 29 watch and clock makers gathered in Basel to show their wares and to support Swiss business during the first world war. A century later Baselworld, which begins today, is the world’s most famous watch and jewellery show. Exhibitors from around the globe descend on the city to showcase the hottest design trends.
But there is agony within the ecstasy of luxury consumption. Fine-jewellery sales remain strong, but the watch market is ticking over more slowly and fashions have changed too. Sales of high-end timepieces have held up—even as the Chinese government cracks down on corruption—but growth has sagged in the larger market for cheaper watches.
Baselworld is feeling the pressure. Numbers are likely to be down this year from the 135,000 who attended in 2017. Several jewellers have forsaken the show in favour of art fairs. Some heavyweight brands, including Dior, are among those clocking out.
