關於“羅漢錢”，歷史上沒有記載，連泉家丁福寶的《歷代古錢圖說》上都遺漏了它的資料，正因為如此，民間有不少傳說。一說是十六世紀初，康熙皇帝派兵進西藏平叛，途中缺軍餉，便向佛寺徵集銅佛鑄錢，為了湊數，連同18尊金質羅漢獻繳，被一爐熔化鑄錢，因而此錢金光燦爛，故稱“羅漢錢”；二說是道光年間，杭州淨慈寺有羅漢像500尊，一位虔誠的信徒偶然在羅漢像的背洞裡摸出這種康熙錢，認為神賜，如獲至寶，將摸出的銅錢稱為“羅漢錢”。
事實上“羅漢錢”是專為康熙皇帝60壽辰而鑄的一種祝壽錢。康熙是清代在位最久的皇帝，長達61年，康熙52年（1713年）3月，正是他60大壽，特命戶部寶泉局（當時的造幣廠）精鑄一批“萬壽錢”作為壽辰紀念，錢幣背面左右為滿文“寶泉”兩字，表示北京戶部寶泉局製造。
這種錢幣做工尤為精美，由於有傳說摻入金質羅漢的材料而鑄，所以後人把它打製成戒指，或把它熔鍊提出金子，或當作壓歲錢賜予晚輩，或在女兒出嫁時作為壓箱錢，致使存世數量越來越少，至今已成為泉家不易多得的少見品種。
