In 1989 an 8.2 earthquake almost flattened（夷为平地） America, killing over 30,000 people in less than four minutes. A father left his wife safely at home and rushed to the school where his son was supposed to be, only to discover that the building was as flat as a pancake.
1989年，一场8.2级的地震几乎把美国给铲平了，有超过3万人在这不到4分钟的时间里丧失了生命！一个父亲在家里安顿好妻子后，就冲向了儿子就读的学校。然而呈现在他眼前的却是一个已经被夷为平地的校园。
After the unforgettably initial shock, he remembered the promise he had made to his son: “No matter what, I'll always be there for you!” He began to direct his attention towards where he walked his son to class at school each morning.
经历了刚开始那难忘的震惊后，他想起自己曾对儿子做过的承诺：“不管发生什么事，我总会在你身边。” 于是他开始努力回想每天早晨送儿子上学的路线
Remembering his son’s classroom would be in the back right corner of the building; he rushed there and started digging through the ruins. As he was digging, other helpless parents arrived, clutching（捂着） their hearts, saying: “My son!” “My daughter!”
当他终于记起儿子的教室应该就位于那幢建筑物后面的右边角落里时，他立即冲向那里并开始在废墟中挖掘。 当这个父亲正在拼命挖掘时，其他的学生家长也赶来了，他们束手无策，只能揪心地呼喊着：“我的儿子！”“我的女儿！”
Other well-meaning （好心的）parents tried to pull him off what was left of the school, saying: “It’s too late!” “They’re all dead.“ “You can’t help! Go home!” ”Come on, face the reality, there’s nothing you can do!” To each parent he responded with one line: “are you going to help me now?” and then he continue to dig for his son, stone by stone.
有些好心的家长试着把这位父亲从学校的那片废墟上拉走，同时还告诉他：“现在做什么都太晚了！”“他们都死了！”“这样做根本就于事无补，回家吧！”“不要这样，面对现实吧，你现在根本就无能为力”。面对这些劝告，这个父亲的回答只有一句：“现在你们愿意帮我吗？”接着便继续在废墟里寻找他的儿子，一块石头一块石头地挖掘。
The fire chief showed up and tried to pull him off the school’s ruins saying, “Fires are breaking out, explosions are happening everywhere. You’re in danger. We'll take care of it. Go home.” The police came and said, “You’re angry, anxious and it’s over. You’re endangering others. Go home. We’ll ”handle it!
消防队长也过来了，他也试图将这位父亲从学校的废墟上拉走，并告诉他说：“火灾不断发生，到处都在发生爆炸。你这样太危险了，我们会处理好这里的事情，你赶紧回家去！” 警察也赶到了，劝他道：“你这会儿又气又急，赶快停手，不然会给其他人带来危险，回家吧！这里由我们来处理。”
Courageously（鼓足勇气） he went on alone because he needed to know for himself: “Is my boy alive or is he dead?” He dug for eight hours...12 hours...24 hours...36 hours...then, in the 38th hour, he pulled back a large stone and heard his son’s voice.
这位父亲鼓足勇气，独自一人继续着他的工作，因为他必须弄清楚：“我的儿子到底是生是死。” 这位父亲一直就这样挖着，8小时过去了，12小时过去了，24小时过去了，36小时过去了……终于，在他挖到第38小时的时候，他将一块巨大的石头推开后，终于听到了儿子的声音。
He screamed his son’s name: “ARMAND!” He heard back: “Dad!?! It’s me, Dad! I told the other kids not to worry. I told them that if you were alive, you’d save me and when you saved me, they’d be saved. You promised, No matter what happens, I’ll always be there for you! You did it, Dad!”
父亲大声喊着儿子的名字：“阿曼达！” 他听到了儿子的回答：“是爸爸吗？我在这儿，爸爸，我跟其他的小朋友说别着急。我跟他们说，只要你还活着，你肯定会来救我的。只要我能获救，他们也可以获救。你对我承诺说，不管发生什么事，我总会在你的身边，你真的做到了，爸爸！”
“What’s going on in there? How is it?” the father asked. “There are 14 of us left out of 33, Dad. We’re scared, hungry, thirsty and thankful you’re here. When the building collapsed , it made a triangle, and it saved us.”
“你那里有什么情况，具体怎么样？”父亲问道。 “我们一共有33个人，现在只有14个人活着。爸爸，我们都很害怕，感到又饿又渴，看到你来真是要谢天谢地。教学楼在倒塌时刚好形成一个三角形的空间，我们因此得以存活。”
“Come out, boy!” “No, Dad! Let the other kids out first, cause I know you’ll get me! No matter what happens, I know you’ll always be there for me!”
“赶紧出来吧！我的孩子！” “不必了，爸爸，先让其他小朋友出去吧！因为我知道你肯定会来接我的！不管发生什么，我知道你总会在我身边！”
