今天來談這句 In a nutshell，這句話的用法其實就是以前我們在書本上學的 overall speaking或是 briefly speaking，也就是以最簡潔的方式來表達你想說的話，中文可以翻為『總括來說』或是『簡單來說』。
這句話的起源公元77年有位羅馬作家叫做 Pliny 在看了古希臘詩人 Homer 的『伊利昂紀』之後所寫出來的感想。
Pliny 描述『伊利昂紀』是 such a tiny hand that it could fit into the shell of a walnut，也就是說他覺得『伊利昂紀』的風格用字簡單，以吟唱的方式，就像是放進了核桃殼一樣那麼簡潔扼要，這對於當時文字系統不發達的人民而言，可以讓更多人瞭解特洛伊戰爭的歷史而起了很大的作用。
直接來兩個例句吧：
(1) In a nutshell, money is not the root of all happiness. There are still many things that money can’t buy, such as friendship and health.
簡單來說，錢並不是所有快樂的根源。還是有很多東西是錢買不到的，比方說友情跟健康。
(2) To put it in a nutshell, global warming is a critical issue that all of us have to deal with to give our next generation a better place to live.
總括來說，全球暖化是我們大家所必須處理的一個重要議題，以便給我們下一代有更好的居住環境。
