allow大家都学过，那么allowance 呢？
最近安行老师的学生做英语题的时候，发现一个有意思的单词，他不会就来问问我。
原题是2018年江苏高考英语题，其中有这么一句话：
They planned to keep the __________ low by living on boiled noodles, with the occasional hamburger shop treat.
A. budget B. revenue
C. compensation D. allowance
这道题的答案是A。Keep the budget low的意思是“保持低预算”。
但学生问的是D选项allowance是什么意思呢？
这个单词乍一看和哪个单词比较像呢？
没错。没学过这个单词的学生一定误认为这个单词和allow有关系，那么他就犯了大错特错了。
allow这个单词初中就学过，是“允许”的意思，比如：
I'd rather die than allow you to defile the Church.
我宁愿死也不会让你玷污教会
《美国恐怖故事 第2季 第10集》
而allowance呢？
它最主要的意思是什么呢？
1. an amount of money that is given to sb regularly or for a particular purpose
也就是“津贴；补贴；补助 ”
看个例句：
Come on! I bet my entire month's allowance on this!
加油 我把整月的饷钱都押上了。
《波斯王子：时之刃》
2. A particular type of allowance is an amount of something that you are allowed in particular circumstances.
也就是“限额；定量”
比如：
Most of our flights have a baggage allowance of 44lbs per passenger.
我们大多数航班行李限重为每位乘客44磅。
其次，它还有“体谅”、“考虑到”的意思。
比如：He's tired so I'll make allowances for him.
他很累，所以我会体谅他。
We'll make allowances in the schedule for time off...
日程安排时我们会把休息时间考虑在内。
这两句话中，有一个重要的词组一定要记住：
make allowance(s) for sth
考虑到，估计到（如在决策或计划时）
make allowances (for sb)
体谅；谅解
对于高考生而言，最重要的就是记住它的“津贴、补助”的含义。
