Founded in 2001, the Journal focuses on publishing thought provoking new pieces that focus on both original research as well as challenges to previous works. The Michigan Journal of History (MJH) is comprised of undergraduate editors at the University of Michigan whose passion for History has drawn them to this annual publication.

MJH does not focus on one particular type of historical submission. Students with focus areas in all types of History are encouraged to submit; we also encourage students from other disciplines including, but not limited to, history, anthropology, political science, law, international studies, area studies, ethnic studies, and gender and sexuality studies to send in their papers, granted they demonstrate a historical theme.

TUFTS HISTORICAL REVIEW

Tufts Historical Review Volume XII: Muses

Deadline: 31 January 2019

The Tufts Historical Review Editorial Board is delighted to announce a call for submissions to Volume XII of the Tufts Historical Review, an academic journal of global history that seeks both undergraduate and graduate papers of the highest caliber.

Theme

This year, the theme of our journal is Muses.

As a source of inspiration or an undirected wondering, great thinkers, creators, and innovators have encouraged people in amazing ways. The nine muses of classical mythology represented ingenuity and discovery. Following their specialities of poetry, music, history, astronomy, comedy, and dance, people have produced magnificent works through a spark of inspiration in their honor.

Throughout history people have been inspired by the muses and by a variety of other means. The westward expansion of the United States was believed to stem from the higher calling of manifest destiny. Frida Kahlo used the experiences of her life to be her own muse. Philosophers like Hesiod and Sartre pondered the questions of the universe in an aimless manner that yielded entirely new fields of thought and manners of thinking. Divine inspiration exhorted Mansa Musa to undertake a pilgrimage in such ostentatious style that he lowered the global price of gold. Inspiration in the form of the disciplined way of the samurai, bushido, encouraged Tokugawa Ieyasu to unite Japan in the 17th century.

The development of humanity is a story of extraordinary accomplishments by remarkable people. Behind every one of those people is a source of inspiration, be it religious, political, or personal. Every story has its muse.

These are just a few examples. The Editorial Board seeks outstanding articles – between 2,500 and 8,000 words – that explore our theme from a diverse array of perspectives.

Submissions are due by 31 January 2019, and should be submitted to [email protected].

Criteria

The Tufts Historical Review is committed to publishing the finest undergraduate and graduate historical research. As such, we require that all submissions subscribe to the highest standards of academic quality. Failure to comply with the following requirements may result in the rejection of a submission.

• All submissions must be cited in accordance with the Chicago Manual of Style, 17th Edition.

• No submissions that have previously appeared in another publication will be considered eligible.

• A cover page should be attached to each submission, and it should include the title of the paper, the author’s name, email, and university affiliation.

• Applicant’s information should only appear on the cover page.

• Submissions should range between 2,500 and 8,000 words. Longer submissions are acceptable, but will be subject to editing for purposes of brevity, if selected.

• Submissions from both undergraduate (B.A.) and graduate (M.A., PhD.) students are welcomed.

• Please note that submissions need not explicitly reference the word “muses” to be eligible for consideration. We encourage novel treatments of the theme!

The Tufts Historical Review is one of the few undergraduate-led journals of its kind in the United States. A highly selective publication intended to recognize outstanding student work in history and the humanities, the Tufts Historical Review is distributed to the libraries of leading research institutions, including Harvard University, Brown University, Oxford University, the College of William and Mary, and Georgetown University. Alongside an active student board of undergraduate and graduate students, the Tufts Historical Review works closely in conjunction with an advisory board including renowned scholars, such as Tufts University President Anthony Monaco.

All submissions must be emailed as word documents (.docx) to [email protected] by 31 January 2019 for review by the editorial board of the Tufts Historical Review. For more information, please visit us online at http://ase.tufts.edu/pandp/historicalreview/.

We look forward to reading your submission!

Call for Articles for a new journal:

The Journal of Applied History

Type: Journal

Subject Fields:

African History / Studies, American History / Studies, Asian History / Studies,

Contemporary History, Humanities

This year, Brill has launched a new, interdisciplinary and peer-reviewed scholarly journal concerned with the application of historical knowledge and insights to current matters: the Journal of Applied History (https://brill.com/view/journals/joah/joah-overview.xml)

Unlike other journals, the Journal of Applied History offers a platform for articles in which the results of historical research are applied to present-day issues. By connecting historical case studies to contemporary concerns and (or) future possibilities, authors are asked to make an explicit connection between past, present and future.

As such the Journal of Applied History seeks to promote long-term thinking when considering the causes and implications of present affairs and issues. The journal, which is published biannually, seeks to inform scholars and policy makers interested in connecting past and present through publishing relatively short articles of approximately 4,000 words.

We encourage contributions from specialists in all branches of the humanities and social sciences who adopt a historical approach: from historians and anthropologists, to political scientists and sociologists, and from experts in the history of antiquity to those working on the very recent past, thus bringing together long-term perspectives and various approaches and methodologies.
