1) You Read in English

Thomas Edison's laboratory was entirely destroyed by fire in December, 1914.

Although the damage exceeded $2 million, the buildings were insured for $238,000 because they were made of concrete and thought to be fireproof.

Much of Edison's life's work went up in spectacular flames that December night.

At the height of the fire, Edison's 24-year-old son,Charles, anxiously searched for his father among the smoke and debris.

He finally found him, calmly watching the scene, his face glowing in the reflection, his white hair blowing in the wind.

2) Put English into English

1. Thomas Edison's laboratory was entirely destroyed by fire in December, 1914.

1a. Laboratory means lab.A laboratory is a lab.

1b. entirely means completely,totally, wholly,fully, virtually.

1c. was entirely destroyed by fire means was completely destroyed by fire.

1d. to destroy something means to damage something,to shatter something,to ruin something, to level something to the ground.

2. Although the damage exceeded $2 million

2a. the damage means the destruction, the loss

2b.to exceed is to be more than,to be greater than.

To be more than能“理解”exceed就够了,非得“译”入中文才能“懂”?

3. the buildings were insured for $238,000

3a. The building was covered by an insurance of $238,000.

3b. The insurance company paid him $238,000 in insurance.

4. because they were made of concrete and thought to be fireproof.

4a. Concrete means building a house with bricks and motar and steel, not with wood.

4b. If something is fireproof, it will not be damaged,or burned down by fire.

We also say:waterproof like a waterproof watch. But we say Airtight, not airproof.

5. Much of Edison's life's work went up in spectacular flames that December night.

5a. go up in flames means be destroyed by fire

6.At the height of the fire, Edison's 24-year-old son,Charles, anxiously searched for his father among the smoke and debris.

6a. At the height of something means at the highest point of something, like at the height of my career,at the height of the storm rain.

6b. To search for something or somebody is To look for something or somebody,to seek for sth. or sb.
