have an ace up one's sleeve比喻“手中握有王牌、解救危机的好办法”。据说16世纪，人们的衣服没有口袋，就把东西放在袖子里。于是，赌徒就把王牌A藏在袖子里作弊。后来该短语的贬义色彩逐渐消退，有了“锦囊妙计”的意思
例：
I still have an ace up my sleeve that you don’t know about.
我还留有你不知道的一个绝招。

get the boot
解雇
boot的意思是“靴子”或“长筒靴”。get是得到的意思。这跟解雇有什么关系呢？boot在这里实际上是指用靴子“踢”人的动作。
get the boot这个习惯用法的意思是，雇员做错了事情，至少是让老板不高兴，结果被老板“踢”了出来，也就是中文里的“炒鱿鱼”。
例：
My boss seems to be down on me. I'm afraid I'll get the boot.
老板似乎不喜欢我，恐怕我要被炒鱿鱼了。
