The facts

1. Editors of newspapers and magazines often go to extremes to provide their readers with unimportant facts and statistics.

Editors of newspapers and magazines

谓语:provide

宾语:their readers

宾补:unimportant facts and statistics

2. Last year a journalist had been instructed by a well-known magazine to write an article on the president's palace in a new African republic.

Last year

主语:a journalist

谓语:had been instructed to write

3. When the article arrived, the editor read the first sentence and then refused to publish it.

4. The article began: 'Hundreds of steps lead to the high wall which surrounds the president's palace.'

Hundreds of steps lead to the high wall.

从句:The wall surrounds the president's palace.

5. The editor at once sent the journalist a fax instructing him to find out the exact number of steps and the height of the wall.

The editor at once sent the journalist a fax.

子句:The editor instruct him to find out sth.

6. The journalist immediately set out to obtain these important facts, but he took a long time to send them.

1:The journalist immediately set out to obtain these important facts.

句子2:he took a long time to send them.

7. Meanwhile, the editor was getting impatient, for the magazine would soon go to press.

1:the editor was getting impatient.

句子2:the magazine would soon go to press.

8. He sent the journalist two more faxes, but received no reply.

9. He sent yet another fax informing the journalist that if he did not reply soon he would be fired.

He sent yet another fax.

子句1:The fax informed the journalist sth.

子句:(用来说明子句1中的 sth):If he did not reply soon he would be fired.

10. When the journalist again failed to reply, the editor reluctantly published the article as it had originally been written.

主句:the editor reluctantly published the article.

状语从句:the journalist again failed to reply.

as 引导的子句:it had originally been written.

11. A week later, the editor at last received a fax from the journalist.

12. Not only had the poor man been arrested, but he had been sent to prison as well.

The poor man had been arrested.

因为加了 not only 放在句首,所以把助动词 had 放在主语 the poor man 的前面。

13. However, he had at last been allowed to send a fax in which he informed the editor that he had been arrested while counting the 1,084 steps leading to the fifteen-foot wall which surrounded the president's palace.

He had at last been allowed to send a fax.

He informed the editor sth in the fax.

He had been arrested while counting the 1,084 steps leading to the fifteen-foot wall which surrounded the president's palace.
