The Selfish Giant 自私的巨人
Every afternoon, the children used to go and play in the Giant (巨人)’sgarden (花园) as they were coming from school.
每天下午，孩子们总会在放学回来后去巨人的花园里玩耍。
It was a large lovely garden, with soft green grass.
这是一个可爱的大花园，长满了柔嫩的青草。
Here and there over the grass bloomed beautiful flowers, just like stars.
草丛间到处盛开着美丽的鲜花，如繁星点点。
And there were twelve peach (桃子) trees in the garden.
花园里还有十二棵桃树。
In the spring-time, the trees broke out into delicate (娇嫩的) blossoms of pink and pearl, and in the autumn bore rich fruit.
每到春天，树上开出了粉红色和珍珠色的娇嫩花朵，到了秋天就会结出丰硕的果实。
The birds rested on the trees and sang so sweetly that the children couldn't help but stopped playing games and listened.
鸟儿栖息在树上，唱得如此甜美，以致于孩子们都禁不住要停止游戏来聆听。
“How happy we are here!” they cried to each other.
“我们在这儿多么快乐啊！”他们互相欢叫。
One day the Giant came back.
有一天巨人回来了。
He had been to visit his friend the Cornish Ogre, and had stayed with him for seven years.
他曾去拜访他的朋友康沃尔怪物，并和他一起住了七年。
After the seven years were over, the Giant had said all that he wanted to say.
七年结束后，巨人说完了所有他想说的话。
For his conversation would come to an end, he determined to return to his own castle.
因为他的交谈总会结束，他决定回到自己的城堡。
When he arrived, he saw the children playing in the garden.
当他到家的时候，他看见孩子们正在花园里玩耍。
“What are you doing here?” he cried in a very gruff voice, and the children ran away.
“你们在这儿做什么？”他用非常粗暴的声音喊道，孩子们都跑走了。
“My own garden is my own garden.” said the Giant, “Anyone can understand that, and I will allow nobody to play in it but myself.”
“我自己的花园就是我自己的。”巨人说道，“随便什么人都明白，除了我以外，我不允许任何人在里面玩。”
So he built a high wall all around the garden, and put up a notice-board.
于是他在花园的四周砌起了高高的围墙，并支起一块告示牌。
What a selfish (自私的) giant he is!
他是个多么自私的巨人啊！
And the garden suddenly became silent.
于是花园瞬间变得寂静了。
