This isn’t necessarily a bad move at all. Vogel has a lot of experience coaching against Lebron, so probably understands his tendencies more so than other coaches. And those Pacers teams he coached performed fairly well considering the circumstance. This will be a wait and see until anyone I make a definitive take.

It's a different league now - he has to cover the 3 point line and shoot 3s to have relevance in the league anymore, but he never was able to adapt. This also makes me realize that the Lakers, a team that sucked this year in large part due to having a roster makeup of non catch and shoot 3 point guys despite having lebron, is now going to rely on Vogel and Kidd, 2 coaches who have had no success since that era of basketball when Roy Hibbert was able to dominate

Vogel at least had success as a coach. Kidd has no success. Kidd should have been an assistant for a few years before jumping to head coach.
I have no problem with a team hiring him as an assistant. It could actually be a good role for him. Probably not on the Lakers though with how dysfunctional they are.

Honestly this is not a terrible move. Vogel isn’t the sexiest name, or in my opinion, the best of coaches, but he is a solid hire. I see him as very middle of the road coach, and with lebron that might be all you need. That is also assuming the Lakers improve a bit, either through free agency or internal development. I still think the Ty Lue contract situation is incredibly embarrassing for the Lakers, and I don’t understand their insistence on bringing Jason freaking Kidd on as an assistant, but TBH this is far from the worst case scenario for the Lakers. Nothing spectacular, but nothing spectacularly awful either.

He was awful in Orlando and I don't really blame him for our win loss record because in the 2017 we really got screwed by injuries BUT he really didn't help. He never held any players accountable had really bad rotations, and the players never really respected him. You can see the differences in how our young players talk about Vogel and how they talk about coach Clifford
