Was amazed to find this old telegram when sorting through my father’sthings at home. My parents had kept it all these years! When I saw it, the oldchildhood memory flooded back.
當我在家裡整理父親的物品時，驚奇地發現一張很舊的電報。這些年來他的父母都把這張電報好好地保存著。當我看到它時，童年往事不斷湧現。
The date was 26 September 1958. My father was still practising as a lawyer inLee & Lee. He was in Sibu (Sarawak) doing some cases, and was expectedhome. He sent this telegram to Lee & Lee (whose telegraph addresswas KYLEGAL SINGAPORE). It read simply “ARRIVING TODAY BATTLESHIP =LEEKUANYEW”.
日期是在1958年9月26日。當時父親仍在Lee & Lee律師事務所當律師。當天他在Sibu處理一些案件，並打算回家。電報是寄到Lee & Lee律師事務所的，該事務所的電報地址是KYLEGALSINGAPORE。電報的內容只寫： “ARRIVINGTODAY BATTLESHIP = LEEKUANYEW” （今天到戰艦=李光耀）。
My mother did not understand the message. Was my father coming home on abattleship? The Lee & Lee secretary called the British Naval Base atSembawang to check if any battleship was arriving from Sarawak, but they knewnothing about it.
母親看不懂電報，父親要坐戰艦回家嗎？Lee & Lee律師事務所的秘書致電三巴旺的英國海軍基地，詢問是否有戰艦從Sarawak回到這裡，但他們也不清楚。
My father did arrive home that day, but not by battleship. He explained that hewanted steam boat for dinner, but as “steam boat” was two words, and telegramswere charged by the word, he wrote “battleship” instead, to save words andmoney! Sadly, since we had not understood the message, we did not have steamboat for dinner that night.
當天父親回到家，但不是坐戰艦回來的。他解釋說他想晚餐吃火鍋，但由於“steam boat”是兩個英文單詞，而電報是按照每個英文字來收費的，所以他用一個英文字battleship（戰艦）來代替，省字也省錢！可惜，因為我們都看不懂信息，那天晚餐也就沒有火鍋吃了！

郵局局長寫的通知書中表示英國殖民政府不反對我的父親代表工會參與談判。
A year after the postmen’s strike, John Laycock complained that my fatherwas spending too much time on these “lengthy arbitrations”, and that he was notto take on any more of these disputes。
郵政大罷工後的一年，John Laycock抱怨說我的父親花太多的時間在這些冗長的仲裁上，他還表示他不會參與這些爭辯。
