艾德琳·弗吉尼亚·伍尔芙Adeline Virginia Woolf，英国女作家、文学批评家和文学理论家，意识流文学代表人物，被誉为二十世纪现代主义与女性主义的先锋。
伍尔夫的一生充满了传奇色彩，饱受精神疾病的痛苦，大胆追寻自由和独立。
伍尔芙把艺术看得高于一切，她的散文优美洒脱，在《伍尔夫读书随笔》里，她十分敏锐、坦率地表达着自己，与逝去的作家作品对话，不自觉地流露出自己鲜明的女性主义观点。她的作品也侧重于人物的心理和精神世界。
她不只一次地强调了女性要“成为自己”。在那样的年代，她的观点是超前的且是具有开放性的，并没有试图斩断与现实的联系，而是以其优雅的姿态，干脆直接提出自己的观点：“一个写作的女人应该有钱，而且有一间自己的房间”，完完全全是消磨自己的时间，做自己乐意做的事情，保持自己一部分“自我”的场地。

不论你是否真的遇到过，权且想象一下。世界上有种谜一样的女子，让她身边的男人全都神魂颠倒。她和谁都有关系，但谁都不是她的唯一。你不能占有她100%的时间，但她跟你在一起时又100%的投入。爱上这样世俗意义上有点水性杨花的女子是件既美好又恼人的事，让你不甘心如此，又舍不得离开，《寻欢作乐》里的威利·阿申登面对罗西如此，《追忆似水年华》里的斯万面对奥黛特也是如此。
不同于普鲁斯特的挣扎和痛苦，毛姆假借主角之口，以超然的态度点透这个迷局。
这个片段出自毛姆半自传式的现实主义作品《寻欢作乐》，最初于1930年以连载的形式刊登在 Harper's Bazaar 上，很难想象《时尚芭莎》曾经还有这样的文学趣味。英文书名 Cakes and Ale 也取得非常精彩，来自莎士比亚的名句，原文是说你以为自己道德高尚，别人就不能寻欢作乐了吗？
我喜欢阅读现实主义的作品，因为只有这样才能看到那些超越想象、细致入微、感同身受、且极具时代意义的细节。罗曼·罗兰、普鲁斯特、茨维格和乔伊斯都是这样的作家，曹雪芹和兰陵笑笑生也是这样的作家。当然还有毛姆，他曾经说过：“每个有理智的作家都写自己的生活环境，除此以外他还能写些什么而不失其权威性呢？”
向来喜欢毛姆的刻薄，轻描淡写，一阵见血。但是刻薄在我眼里没有贬义，因为它意味着聪明、超然和幽默。你很难想象刻薄如他也会真情流露，这就是我为什么强烈推荐此书。

19世纪的英国社会是一场虚幻集市，名利场，而现今社会会有很多不同吗? 有人在集市上交易得手，有的人落得一无所获。天下攘攘，皆为利往，天下熙熙，皆为利来。每个人在里面的命运都是差不多的，没有人会永远幸运，也没有人会永远落魄，小人得志并不新鲜，女性命运多舛而反抗总遭审判，一代一代的人又能做什么呢？
这部小说于2018年7月被ITV和Amazon Studio翻拍，编剧Gwyneth Hughes， 导演 James Strong，由年轻的英国演员Olivia Cooke 与 Claudia Jessie主演。Gwyneth Hughes坦言希望将这部古装剧拍出时尚感，适合今天的观影趣味，更有现实意义。在BAFTA影厅我有幸成为这部剧的首批观众，感慨于英剧对服道化细节的一贯考究和演员细腻有层次的表演，配乐也极时尚，感觉将是不输《唐顿庄园》之作。

我推荐这段文字的主要原因是被简爱的ego所打动。在这里我认为ego不是贬义词（即“自大”）而是中性词—自我意识。无论处境如何、无论条件怎样，我们都需要有自我意识，不能一开始就放弃了追求平等的权利。有很多高墙都是自己无意识垒起来的安全区，向前一步，趁着年轻，有想做的事情，都要主动去争取。

In 1972 the Tate Gallery in London purchased a sculpture called Equivalent VIII by Carl Andre, an American Minimalist artist. Made it 1966, it consists of 120 firebricks which, laid out as per the artist’s instructions, were configured into a two-brick deep rectangle. When the Tate exhibited the work in the mid-70s, it proved rather controversial.
There was nothing particularly special about the light-coloured bricks; they could have been purchased by anybody for a few pennies each. The Tate Gallery paid over £2,000 for them. The British press had a collective meltdown. ‘Wasting our national cash on a pile of bricks!’ screamed the papers. Even the Burlington Magazine, a highbrow art periodical, asked, ‘Has the Tate gone mad?’ Why, one publication wanted to know, had the Tate squandered precious public money on something that ‘might have occurred to any bricklayer’?

在伦敦读书的时候，很喜欢去泰特美术馆（Tate Modern）逛一逛。去那里的路上，会经过泰晤士河，会看到很美的桥，远远能望到圣保罗大教堂，一路上会遇到各种街头艺人在表演，每个人都很有才华。美术馆里面的展览，每一次都不会让人失望。那是一个让人的心慢下来，静下来的地方。尤其雨后的伦敦，可以盯着地上的积水发呆好半天，看它映出天上的云的模样。看到这本书里关于Tate的描述，就想推荐给大家。
