艾德琳·弗吉尼亞·伍爾芙Adeline Virginia Woolf，英國女作家、文學批評家和文學理論家，意識流文學代表人物，被譽為二十世紀現代主義與女性主義的先鋒。
伍爾夫的一生充滿了傳奇色彩，飽受精神疾病的痛苦，大膽追尋自由和獨立。
伍爾芙把藝術看得高於一切，她的散文優美灑脫，在《伍爾夫讀書隨筆》裡，她十分敏銳、坦率地表達著自己，與逝去的作家作品對話，不自覺地流露出自己鮮明的女性主義觀點。她的作品也側重於人物的心理和精神世界。
她不只一次地強調了女性要“成為自己”。在那樣的年代，她的觀點是超前的且是具有開放性的，並沒有試圖斬斷與現實的聯繫，而是以其優雅的姿態，乾脆直接提出自己的觀點：“一個寫作的女人應該有錢，而且有一間自己的房間”，完完全全是消磨自己的時間，做自己樂意做的事情，保持自己一部分“自我”的場地。

不論你是否真的遇到過，權且想象一下。世界上有種謎一樣的女子，讓她身邊的男人全都神魂顛倒。她和誰都有關係，但誰都不是她的唯一。你不能佔有她100%的時間，但她跟你在一起時又100%的投入。愛上這樣世俗意義上有點水性楊花的女子是件既美好又惱人的事，讓你不甘心如此，又捨不得離開，《尋歡作樂》裡的威利·阿申登面對羅西如此，《追憶似水年華》裡的斯萬面對奧黛特也是如此。
不同於普魯斯特的掙扎和痛苦，毛姆假借主角之口，以超然的態度點透這個迷局。
這個片段出自毛姆半自傳式的現實主義作品《尋歡作樂》，最初於1930年以連載的形式刊登在 Harper's Bazaar 上，很難想象《時尚芭莎》曾經還有這樣的文學趣味。英文書名 Cakes and Ale 也取得非常精彩，來自莎士比亞的名句，原文是說你以為自己道德高尚，別人就不能尋歡作樂了嗎？
我喜歡閱讀現實主義的作品，因為只有這樣才能看到那些超越想象、細緻入微、感同身受、且極具時代意義的細節。羅曼·羅蘭、普魯斯特、茨維格和喬伊斯都是這樣的作家，曹雪芹和蘭陵笑笑生也是這樣的作家。當然還有毛姆，他曾經說過：“每個有理智的作家都寫自己的生活環境，除此以外他還能寫些什麼而不失其權威性呢？”
向來喜歡毛姆的刻薄，輕描淡寫，一陣見血。但是刻薄在我眼裡沒有貶義，因為它意味著聰明、超然和幽默。你很難想象刻薄如他也會真情流露，這就是我為什麼強烈推薦此書。

19世紀的英國社會是一場虛幻集市，名利場，而現今社會會有很多不同嗎? 有人在集市上交易得手，有的人落得一無所獲。天下攘攘，皆為利往，天下熙熙，皆為利來。每個人在裡面的命運都是差不多的，沒有人會永遠幸運，也沒有人會永遠落魄，小人得志並不新鮮，女性命運多舛而反抗總遭審判，一代一代的人又能做什麼呢？
這部小說於2018年7月被ITV和Amazon Studio翻拍，編劇Gwyneth Hughes， 導演 James Strong，由年輕的英國演員Olivia Cooke 與 Claudia Jessie主演。Gwyneth Hughes坦言希望將這部古裝劇拍出時尚感，適合今天的觀影趣味，更有現實意義。在BAFTA影廳我有幸成為這部劇的首批觀眾，感慨於英劇對服道化細節的一貫考究和演員細膩有層次的表演，配樂也極時尚，感覺將是不輸《唐頓莊園》之作。

我推薦這段文字的主要原因是被簡愛的ego所打動。在這裡我認為ego不是貶義詞（即“自大”）而是中性詞—自我意識。無論處境如何、無論條件怎樣，我們都需要有自我意識，不能一開始就放棄了追求平等的權利。有很多高牆都是自己無意識壘起來的安全區，向前一步，趁著年輕，有想做的事情，都要主動去爭取。

In 1972 the Tate Gallery in London purchased a sculpture called Equivalent VIII by Carl Andre, an American Minimalist artist. Made it 1966, it consists of 120 firebricks which, laid out as per the artist’s instructions, were configured into a two-brick deep rectangle. When the Tate exhibited the work in the mid-70s, it proved rather controversial.
There was nothing particularly special about the light-coloured bricks; they could have been purchased by anybody for a few pennies each. The Tate Gallery paid over £2,000 for them. The British press had a collective meltdown. ‘Wasting our national cash on a pile of bricks!’ screamed the papers. Even the Burlington Magazine, a highbrow art periodical, asked, ‘Has the Tate gone mad?’ Why, one publication wanted to know, had the Tate squandered precious public money on something that ‘might have occurred to any bricklayer’?

在倫敦讀書的時候，很喜歡去泰特美術館（Tate Modern）逛一逛。去那裡的路上，會經過泰晤士河，會看到很美的橋，遠遠能望到聖保羅大教堂，一路上會遇到各種街頭藝人在表演，每個人都很有才華。美術館裡面的展覽，每一次都不會讓人失望。那是一個讓人的心慢下來，靜下來的地方。尤其雨後的倫敦，可以盯著地上的積水發呆好半天，看它映出天上的雲的模樣。看到這本書裡關於Tate的描述，就想推薦給大家。
