三、Beat，hit，strike，knock的辨析
Beat，hit，strike，knock四個詞都有“敲打，打擊”之意。但有區別：
1) beat強調連續或反覆地“打”，因此像心臟跳動、打鼓、打拍子等之類具有連續性或反覆性的動作，一般要用 beat。還可以表示“打敗”， 如：
He is still alive. His heart is still beating. 他還活著，他的心臟還在跳動。Listen. Someone is beating the drum. 聽！有人敲鼓。 The landlord beat the farmhand heavily. 地主毒打長工。The Iraq army was beaten. 伊拉克軍隊被打敗了。She was beating the dust out of the carpet. 她在敲打地毯上的灰塵(以敲打的方式除塵)。That man was beaten until he was black and blue．那個人被打得青一塊、紫一塊。
2）hit指“一次性地撞擊、命中”；打擊，襲擊，打中，與strike相比，更強調“命中或對準……射擊”。如：He hit [struck] her hard in the face. 他重重地打了她一耳光。The car ran out of control and hit [struck] a tree. 汽車失去控制，撞在樹上。 He fired and hit the target. 他開了槍，命中目標。She hit the thief on the head. 她打中了小偷的頭。 An earthquake hit the district. 這地區受到地震的襲擊。One of the stones hit the window. 有一塊石頭打中了窗戶。
3）strike與hit基本同義，通常指一下一下地打或敲擊，與hit相比更強調“重擊”，也可表示“劃火柴)”、鐘的敲擊等。如：
The little girl struck the third match and saw her grandpa. 小姑娘划著了第三根火柴，她看到了她的爺爺。The boat struck the rock and broke into pieces. 小船撞上了礁石，碎了。
The clock always strikes 13 times at one o'clock. 這個鍾在 1 點的時候，總是敲 13 下。 Strike while the iron is hot. 趁熱打鐵。
4）knock指敲打併伴有響聲。常與at／on連用。它還有“打倒、打翻”的意思，如：
Someone is knocking at the door. 有人敲門。He knocked the girl down. 他把這女孩撞倒了。
