In 1860, Lincoln ran for president（競選總統） with Douglas, the Democratic（民主黨） candidate of great renown and influence in the United States at that time.
1860年，林肯競選總統。他的對手是當時在美國名望和影響力都很高的民主黨代表道格拉斯。
Douglas relied on the wealth, specially prepared an electioneering train, on which a ceremonial cannon（禮炮） was installed. Wherever he went, he would ring 32-gun salute（致意）.
道格拉斯仰仗著自己有錢，備了一輛競選拉票專用的火車，火車上還裝有禮炮。每到一處，他都會鳴32響禮炮。
However, the election result was the penniless Lincoln defeated Douglas. Look at some words of Lincoln in the election, perhaps we can find the answer to his winning.

In the election, Lincoln always sat on the carriage engaged in（用於） farming, went deep into the voters to have cordial（友好善良的） conversations.
競選中，林肯總是坐著農耕專用的馬車，深入選民中間，和大家誠懇地交談。
He said in his speech, “If you ask me how much property I have, I tell you I have a wife and three daughters, who are priceless. In addition, I also have a rented office, in which there's a desk and three chairs, and in whose corner there's a large bookcase on which each book is worth reading. I'm poor and thin, my face so long. I really have nothing to rely on but on you.”
他在演講中說：“如果問我有多少財產，我告訴大家，我有一個太太和三個女兒，她們是我的無價之寶。除此之外，我還有間租來的辦公室，裡面有一張桌子、三把椅子，角落裡有個書架，架上的每本書都值得一讀。我既沒錢，長得還瘦，大長臉一張。除了你們大家，我別無依靠。”
“It seems that God has a scale, which will forever incline to the direction in which people feel toward.”(上帝有架天平，這天平永遠向人心所向的一端傾斜。)
