Can you come here a minute please, Bob?
Yes, sir?
Where's Pamela?
She's next door. She's in her office, sir.
Can she type this letter for me? Ask her please.

Can you type this letter for the boss please, Pamela?
Yes, of course I can.
Here you are.
Thank you, Bob.
Bob!
Yes? What's the matter?
I can't type this letter.

- Can you type this letter for the boss please, Pamela? - Yes, of course I can.
本課重點學習的語法內容仍然是情態動詞can的用法，只不過本課側重的是can表“可以”的用法，主要用來表達許可。
其基本用法為：
sb. can do sth.
某人會做某事
如：
You can go home now.
你現在可以回家了。
含有情態動詞can的句子，如果變否定句，只要在can後面加not即可。需要注意的是，can和not要合起來寫，或者縮略為can't，不能寫作can not。如：
You cannot / can't go home now.
你現在不能回家。
如果要變為一般疑問句，只要把can提到句首即可。如：
- Can I go home now?
— 我現在可以回家了嗎？
- Yes, you can. / No, you can't.
— 是的，你可以回家了。/ 不，你不能回家。
其特殊疑問句的用法為：
特殊疑問詞+can+其他成分
如：
When can I go home?
我什麼時候可以回家？

Yes? What's the matter?
注意“Yes?”在朗讀時要用升調，用來表達說話者的疑問。
此外，“What's the matter?”是簡略提問，是Bob用來問Pamela的，所以其完整形式為“What's the matter, Pamela?”。
“What's the matter, ...?”這種提問方式，是用來詢問對方，出了什麼事，但出事的不一定是對方。
還有一種相關的問法是：
What's the matter with ..., ...?
在這種問法情況下，提問者是問對方（第二個省略號處代表的人），第三方（第一個省略號代表的人或物）出了什麼問題。此外，口語中經常會省略掉第二個省略號所代表的人，因為它就是說話者面對的對方。
但是，有的時候with後面也會接you，此時提問者就是問跟自己對話的對方出了什麼問題。
試比較：
1. What's the matter, Andy?
安迪，你怎麼了？ （問安迪本人怎麼了）
怎麼了，安迪？（不一定問安迪本人怎麼了）
2. What's the matter with you, Andy?
安迪，你怎麼了？（問安迪本人怎麼了）
3. What's the matter with Jane, Andy?
安迪，簡怎麼了？（問簡怎麼了）
