Stop is more general and can refer to motion (example: "I will stop the car at the light") whereas cease implies that something has ended (example: "they ceased all military activity in the region").

"Cease" is more proper and more firm and considered a command, and used often legally.

"Stop" is less formal, "hey, stop doing that."
Cease is an intransitive verb, i.e. You can cease something. But something cannot be ceased. Just like the word "cry".“cease”

"Cease" also has the meaning of "discontinue" as opposed to simply stop. When something has been going on for a while and has now stopped, you can say it has ceased. Also, you can stop a car by braking, but it would be weird to say you cease a car by braking.
