紐約與上海同屬世界上排名前十的國際大都市，幾乎無人不知無人不曉。紐約以“世界金融中心”的身份盛名於世。早在20世紀初，紐約就已經成為了一座摩天大樓聳立，商業高度發達的國際大都市。而那時候的中國還處於清末時期，千瘡百孔，百業待興。而就在這樣的歷史環境下，中國卻湧現出了一座被稱之為“東方巴黎”的國際化城市，它就是上海。
那時的上海因得天獨厚的地理位置，被各國列強看中，並開始瓜分割據，建立起各自的租界區作為在亞洲的金融及貿易樞紐，上海一度成為僅次於日本東京的遠東第二大城市。
隨著新中國成立，改革開放40年後的上海，如今已脫胎換骨，以最具活力的新興國際大都市的形象立足於世界舞臺，甚至被外界稱之為“下一個國際金融中心”，今天的上海在硬件設施方面已經超過了已有百年曆史痕跡的紐約，但上海要在其他方面趕超紐約還有很長的路要走。
