這首歌每個人的解讀都不盡相同，如同我的翻譯是自己的解讀。
《One》並不具備《Where The Streets Have No Name》那樣在搖滾歷史上革命性的全新演繹手法，從樂器的編配，到人聲的演繹，都不是任何實驗性的前衛路線。它近20年來層出不窮的解讀和社會人文意義才是其價值所在。
《One》自始至終保持著一份若即若離的態度，它的歌詞富有深刻的哲學意義和人文思考，然而卻始終若即若離，以至於沒有人能確切說明它的訴求主題。然而僅僅只是一份曖昧，是成就不了一首偉大的歌曲的。《One》的偉大之處就在於，在所有人不同的解讀方式裡，它都不會顯得蹩腳——相反，它都能帶給人同樣的哲思和感動。
從敘情詩的角度去看待，《One》把那份“相濡以沫，不離不棄”的人間真愛演繹得讓人發自肺腑地感動。它此時是一種對於愛情的辯證思考：“One love, one life /When it’s one need , in the night / We’re one ,we’re not the same / Well we hurt each other, then we do it again / We’re one, we’re not the same/ We got to carry each other, carry each other”。此時的《One》，似乎分明地在訴說著一份對於“愛”最深沉的理解，在訴求著愛不是一種需求，而是一種“兩人”形同“一人”的相濡以沫，不離不棄。愛總是伴隨著承諾與責任，兩人要堅定地走在相愛的路上，要如何去看待彼此，看待愛。
相對於普通樂迷的理解，在U2的歌迷之間則更傾向於把這首《One》看成U2在動盪時期獻給樂隊自身的一首歌。當時的U2樂隊，正面臨著前所未有的凝聚力的考驗。
“One love, one life ，one life you got to do what you should / We’re one , but we’re not the same / We got to carry each other, carry each other……”同樣的歌詞，在這個時候卻又呈現出了一種絕然不同的蘊意。這時的《One》，似乎正是樂隊獻給自己的歌曲，它此時又是一種“相處之道”的哲學——人與人都不盡相同，甚至我們並不希望彼此在一起，但有時必須要在一起才能在這個世界生存，那麼我們到底需要的是什麼？是冥頑不靈地繼續各自自我的堅持（“one life you got to do what you should”），亦或懂得尊重彼此的差異？包容彼此的差異？彼此接納，共同進退
然而這些仍然都只是眾多解讀角度的冰山一角，《One》訴求的主題在樂隊的多次暗示下似乎更傾向於U2一貫關注的政治人文話題——消除種族歧視，增加對非洲的人道主義援助。
實際上關於《One》的解讀遠遠不止於此，僅僅是它三部MV中由ANTON COBIJN導演的柏林就衍生出來了新的論點：《One》是敘述戰後的東德與西德的關係，一堵微妙的柏林牆，兩個同根生的“國度”……這就是《One》，十個人的眼裡有著十個截然不同的《One》，也因此，我知道你一定有你的理解——We’re one , but we’re not the same。
當然，最常見的解讀還是人們對愛情的理解，兩個戀人，和而不同、若即若離、彼此控制、彼此掙扎、愛恨交織……
