People who live on the second floor or above in the building 26 at 1115 Hongqiao Road are no longer worrying about climbing stairs and glad to take elevator rides up and down.

All the residents in the building reached consensus to build the elevator. Each elevator costs nearly 800,000 yuan (US$124,000).Government offers a subsidy of up to 40 percent of the elevator cost and the rest covered by the residents. People who live higher pay more and for those who live on the first floor are free from the expense.

At the same time, government also streamlines the approval procedure for the application of installation. Previously 46 stamps from different government agencies were reportedly required but now it only involves 15 stamps.

More than one third of Changning residents are aged above 60. So, installing elevators in old residential buildings is increasingly important.

Two old apartment buildings in Changning have had elevators installed while 13 others are with the installation underway.

Changning authorities have also approved to set up 11 more elevators for old apartment buildings so as to benefit more people.

Martin Bressani, dean and professor of Peter Guo-hua Fu School of Architecture McGill University, thought “Yuyuan Road is a small concentration of charming neighborhood in Shanghai and the essence of its history.”

Bressani believed that Shanghai was also the most prosperous city in China, and Yuyuan Road was the epitome of Shanghai’s centuries-old history. The historical architecture brought not only the historical precipitate, but also the living traces of the inhabitants, linking the city’s past and future.

“Our students are very excited to be able to participate in the Shanghai urban renewal project and hope to have a dialogue with such historical architectures and turn the design dream into a beautiful reality,” said Bressani.
