In recent years, to get more certificates has become a new craze among people. If you ask a

person what he or she is busy doing, you may get the answer that he or she is preparing for a

certificate of some kind.

People prepare for various kinds of certificates for different purposes. Firstly, the employment

pressure forces people to get various certificates in order to get ideal jobs or be more competitive in

the job markets. Secondly, some people want to learn more knowledge and improve abilities in more

fields so that they are eager to prepare for various certificates such as certificates in English,

computer, customs declaration or even engineering, etc.

Form my point of view, we should be more rational when it comes to certificates. Getting

certificates indeed proves that one has gained the related knowledge in a field while, to do a good job

,one needs to obtain more practical experiences in real work.

To conclude, don't get certificates blindly, but try to practice yourself in real work. (172 words)

In recent years, all kinds of University Ranking Lists can be found on some educational we

bsitesor newspapers. University and college ranking has become increasingly popular throughout

the nation. Although the ranking standards vary, these lists have great influence on students and they

are even becoming the only scale to evaluate the colleges and universities.

As to this issue, opinions vary from person to person. Some people hold that university ranki

ng dramatically promotes the development of university in various fields. Such growth as the grand

libraries, splendid stadiums and fruitful academic achievements, has caught the attention of the

world. However, others maintain that university ranking also leads to some undesirable

consequences. For example, academic fraud will be encouraged in order to achieve a higher ranking

among universities. Besides, university rankings will affect the number of students who enroll the

universities, and universities with higher ranking will attract more and better students while one with

3

lower ranking will lose excellent students, further leading to the inequality of universities(分詞作狀語).

As I see it, every coin has two sides. On the one hand, University ranking does

encourage the development and growth of colleges, ranging from enhancing the teaching and researc

h levels to investing in more facilities and equipment. On the other hand, universities‟ ranking

will divide different universities more dramatically, resulting in the bigger gap amonguniversities,

which can not be a good future. (232 words)

Due Attitude Should Be Given to the Study of Chinese

Do you remember these famous names in Chinese literature: Lu xun, Zhu zi qing, Lao she or Bin

g xin? How familiar these names are! Unfortunately, countless students pay no attention to the study

of Chinese nowadays and for the majority of students, the study of Chinese has become a remote

memory.

Several reasons can account for this phenomenon. Firstly, the globalization stimulated the

spread of foreign cultures, and many Chinese students tend to learn foreign languages, leading to the

ignorance of their study of Chinese. Secondly, college students are, to some extent, forced to study

foreign languages to pass exams or find good jobs so that they couldn't spare any time to study

Chinese.

There have been serious consequences owing to the ignorance of the study of Chinese. For

example, more and more students have difficulties in writing and reading Chinese articles. Many

students can speak foreign languages fluently but are reluctant to express themselves in Chinese. In

the long run, Chinese cultures will necessarily be neglected.

In view of the seriousness of the problem, effective measures must be taken before things

get worse. Chinese government should emphasize the development of Chinese culture and Chinese

language. In addition, colleges and universities should change teaching approaches to attract the

interest of more students in studying Chinese. Finally, students should enhance their awareness of

mastering their mother tongue. Through these efforts, I think, the study of Chinese can be promoted.

Should parents send their kids to art classes?

There is a growing tendency nowadays for parents to send their children to register and attend

a great variety of arts courses, such as dancing, calligraphy and musical instruments training, etc.

However, people hold different opinions toward this phenomenon.

Some people maintain that these art classes are of great necessity and benefits to students.

According to a recent survey on pre-school intelligence level, the respondents who take part in art

classes tend to perform better than those who haven't because their minds can be broadened through

some art training. Moreover, the former can have an all-round development by acquiring knowledge

and skills which are not taught in their schools. By contrast, others argue that art classes

would bring about heavy burdens to students and students might not have adequate time to take rest

and reflect on what they have learned in schools.

As a university student, I have ever participated in some arts courses, such as singing and

painting classes and they proved to be helpful for my hobby development. Therefore, I believe that

taking some art courses properly is meaningful to students' development in the

long-term. (190 words)

On the Importance of a Name.

A name is the representation of a person or a product. However, people have diverse opinions

on the importance of a name.

Some people say that name is important because it is the symbol that distinguishes one thing or

person from the others. Besides, a good name will bring people some nice association. A good name,

whether it belongs to a person or a product, may be easily accepted by others and leave the deep

impression on people.

By contrast, some people think that the name is unimportant. They say whether a person is good

or bad cannot be determined by his or her name, and so is a product. The name is only a symbol, and

5

a person will be recognized only with good behavior and performance even if he or she has not a

good name. So will a product.

In my opinion, the name is important but the nature behind the name is more important. A child

will be given a good name with the expectation of the future wealth, health and achievements but in

order to achieve these, hard work is necessary. Similarly, a product with a good name will be widely

accepted only if it has good quality and performance. (207 words)

How to improve student's mental health (類似 FCE 作文中的 Article)

In recent years, there have been many reports at the colleges that misbehaved students resort to

violence. Such behavior has exerted negative impacts towards other students, families and the

society in a whole. Therefore how to improve students' mental health has become a priority of

colleges and the society. After all, the quality-oriented education is to develop students in an

all-round way.

Colleges play an important role in improving the mental health of students. Firstly, some

teachers should be specially arranged to supervise and communicate with students and they can

guide students in overcoming the difficulties of life, thus preventing the mental illness of students.

Secondly, professional consulting services should be provided for students to solve their mental or

psychological problems in order to avoid the bigger risks. Besides, college students should learn to

communicate with each other to avoid the misunderstanding and prevent the misbehavior. Teamwork

is also important in preventing mental illness of college students because everyone will participate in

the teamwork and they have to express themselves and understand others effectively in order to

achieve a common goal. (181 words)

第 7 篇 2008 年 6 月 Will E-books Replace Traditional Books?

Recent decades have seen the rapid development of information technology, and thereby

E-books have wound their way into our daily life. More and more people like to read books online,

especially the young. They can read classics online for knowledge, read magazines or novels online

for leisure, and even read professional articles online for research.

Many people hold the idea that it will not take long for E-books to replace traditional books

because E-books have quite a few advantages over traditional ones. First, E-books are more

accessible to readers, and the readers just need to log onto the internet and read online.

Second, thanks to the advanced technology, E-books is much cheaper than printed ones and it takes

readers less money to buy E-books online, and sometimes, e-books are free.

From my point of view, it is not likely for E-books to replace traditional books for lots of

reasons. For example, reading E-books for a long time will do harm to our eyes, so many people

prefer to reading printed books. Besides, computers and the internet haven't yet been popularized to

every corner of our life, so readers will find themselves more accessible to printed materials.

Nowadays with the rapid development of advanced digital technology, more and more

digital products are commonly and widely used in everyday life, ranging from computers and MP4s

to mobile phones and digital cameras. We are indeed coming into the digital age.

The popularity of digital products will have great influence on our work, study and everyday life.

On the one hand, the digital products really facilitate our life. With the help of computers, we may

even deal with our work at home, enjoying music at the same time. With digital cameras, we may

take clearer photos and keep them more easily and permanently. With digital TV programs, it is

7

convenient for us to watch whatever programs we like at any time.

However, on the other hand, some people are becoming too dependent on digital products and

almost becoming slaves of advanced technology. Nowadays some students even can't calm down to

study without wearing their MP4s and mobile phones at hand. What a terrible scene!

To conclude, with digital products we may have less trouble dealing with problems in life and

enjoy a better-off life, but we must take sensible use of them, always being the master of them.

Should One Expect a Reward When Doing a Good Deed?

When asked about whether one should expect a reward when doing a good deed, different

people hold different views.

Some argue that there should be a reward for a good deed. Firstly, it will encourage the people

who did good deeds, giving them praises from the spirit and material. Secondly, it will set an

inspiring example to the public, encouraging more people to do more good deeds.

By contrast, many people assume that good deeds should be performed without expectations

of any rewards. They think that doing good deeds and helping others is one of the indispensable

virtues of Chinese people. No matter whether one can get rewards or not, he or she should help

others in need or in trouble. Little by little, more and more people will help others without expecting

rewards.

In my opinion, there is some truth in both arguments. On the one hand, people should not

expect a reward when doing a good deed. After all, helping people in trouble is an enjoyment.

However, on the other hand, people who are helped should learn to reward---reward people who

help you, people in need, and all the people in the society. Only by this, a harmonious society can be

formed. (206 words)

The Importance of Reading Classics

Reading classics plays a vital role in a person's growth. By reading classic works, either Chinese

or foreign, one can learn a great deal about history, geography, politics, cultures and customs.

Besides, as these classics are the outstanding representatives of human language, reading them can

enormously improve our ability of reading and writing and help to inherit cultural traditions.

However, a diminishing number of people would like to read classics now. A variety of

factors may have contributed to this phenomenon, but the following are the critical ones. In the

first place, as the pace of life and work quickens, people can find little time to indulge themselves

in thick and serious works. They would rather read light and easy magazines or surf the Internet and

do online reading. In the second place, most classics depict things far away from our real life, which

makes reading them seem irrelevant.

As college students, inheriting and developing cultural heritage is our responsibility. Therefore,

it is essential that we should make plans to read classics regularly. Besides, we should try to influenc

e people around us into reading them. (185 words)

The Celebration of Western Festivals

Nowadays, an increasing number of Chinese are fond of celebrating some Western festivals. For

instance, on Valentine's Day, many people give flowers or chocolate to the one they love. Another

case in point is Christmas. It seems that people around the country now love to celebrate the festival.

A number of factors account for the phenomenon mentioned above. In the first place, due

to the policy of reform and opening-up, Chinese people tend to know and learn more about Western

9

culture and more and more people begin to celebrate Western festivals. Secondly, some businessmen

wish to make money by encouraging people to celebrate those Western festivals. Last but not least,

traditional Chinese festivals lose their attraction, so many people tend to find joy in Western

festivals.

As more people celebrate the Western festivals, many Chinese festivals tend to be ignored.

For example, Chinese Valentine‟s Day, on the Seventh day of July in the Lunar Calendar, is seldom

celebrated and is nearly forgotten. Little by little, traditional Chinese cultures will be neglected and

lost. When the cultural root of a nation is pulled up, will the nation live for a long time? Therefore,

western festivals can be celebrated but more Chinese festivals and cultures need to be valued.

Traveling Abroad

Number of people in City X traveling abroad in 1995, 2000 and 2005

It can be seen from the chart that there have been sharp increases in the number of people

traveling abroad in City X in the past decade. As the chart shows, the year 1995 witnessed only

about 10,000 people from this city touring abroad. In 2000, the number soared to nearly 40,000. Last

year, more than 120,000 people in the city chose to spend their vacations outside China.

A number of factors account for the change in the chart, but the following are the most critical

ones. First, thanks to the policy of reform and opening-up, people have become wealthier than

before and they have more money for traveling abroad. Secondly, some state policies and the boom

of touring industry provide citizens with more opportunities to go out and see the world. Last but no

t the least, people have attached greater importance to the quality of life, thus they spend more

money and time traveling and sight-seeing abroad.

In a word, this chart is a perfect indicator of China‟s fast expanding economy and people‟s risin

g standard of life. The trend of traveling abroad will further stimulate the development of our econo

my and broaden people‟s horizons. Meanwhile, more and more foreign touring markets are willing t

o be open to the Chinese, promoting the communication between each other. (216 words)

A Letter Declining a Job Offer (類似 FCE 作文中的 letter)

December 24, 2005 Dear Sir or Madam:

In response to your letter on December 20, 2005, I was informed that I would be offered the

position as an interpreter in your company. I cordially appreciate your trust and I am much obliged to

you for providing me with such a valuable opportunity.

However, I have to tell you that I can not accept it. The major reason is that I don't think I am

the most appropriate candidate for this post. As a non-English major, though my written and spoken

English are more outstanding than most of my peers, I am not well trained in translation, not to menti

on interpretation, which, I believe is highly demanding. Maybe my performance in the oral

examination has misled you. Actually, I am more interested and more competent in my own major,

i.e. program designing, and I happened to have been offered such a position with another company.

Nonetheless, I, again, want to express my sincere gratefulness for your generous offer and I earnestly

apologize for any inconvenience caused to you. Finally, I hope you can find the ideal candidate as so

on as possible. (正文 183 words)

Best regards.

Say No to Pirated Products.

Piracy is a serious problem with which this country is confronted. In many places we see people

sell pirated books or disks. Actually, piracy has become so widespread that it has severely hindered

the development of the nation's economy.

A number of factors account for the problem, but the following are the most critical ones.

First, pirated products are much cheaper than copyrighted ones, so they are very attractive to people,

especially youngsters, who are not financially well-off. Secondly, with highly developed technology

, it is not difficult to manufacture pirated products. With one authorized copy, the illegal producers

can make thousands of fake ones at a very low cost, thus making huge profits.

As a result, intellectual property rights are severely infringed upon and honest producers lose

the motivation to develop new products. Meanwhile, pirated products are often of low quality, thus

damaging the interest of buyers.

In view of the seriousness of the problem, it is essential that laws and regulations be

formulated and enforced to ban the manufacture and circulation of pirated products. Besides, people

should be educated not to buy pirated products. With these measures taken, we have reasons to

believe that the problem can be solved in the near future. (204 words)

poor.

Write a letter to the editor of a newspaper complaining about the poor service of a bookstore.

June 20th, 2004

Dear Mr. / Miss Editor,

I am a student from Tsinghua University and I am writing to you about my experience of buying a

dictionary and my complaint about the service of a bookstore.

A month ago, I went to a bookstore nearby the university to buy an English dictionary. It was only

after I paid for the dictionary and returned to school that I found some pages were missing. But when

I went back to the bookstore to tell them about the matter, they said that I should have checked the

dictionary before I left the store. According to them, it was my fault and they hold no responsibility

for the whole matter.

What I want to say is that sincerity and enthusiasm are vital to the survival of service industries in

such a market economy featured by fierce competition. It was quite easy for them to change the

dictionary for me but they refused to do so. They will lose all customers if they persist in doing so. I

hope that this letter can draw the attention of the whole society and that the problem can be solved as

soon as possible. (正文 189 words)

Best regards.

Yours sincerely Li Ming
