number即可以作名詞表示數；（雜誌等的）期；號碼；數字；算術，也可以作vi. 計入，表示；總數達到，和作為vt. 編號；計入；數…的數目；使為數有限。
今天我們講的number, 主要是它作為名詞的搭配和用法。主要包括 a number of 和the number of。
a number of
a number of ：表示若干，許多，一些。 後面通常跟可數名詞複數或者代詞或者集合名詞，其後的謂語動詞也要用動詞的複數形式。
如：
And with half habits, you can effectively take on a number of habits without feeling any pressure!
於是用半習慣， 你可以高效地採取一些習慣而不感到任何壓力！
One could write a book on this a topic, and in fact, a number of people have!
也許有人會撰寫關於這個主題的書，但實際上，已經有許多人這樣做了！
On our table in the garden we put a blue card, and all around this blue card we put a number of different gray cards.
我們把一張藍色的卡片放到花園裡的桌子上，再在這張藍色卡片的周圍放上若干張不同的灰色卡片。
** a number of 的number前面還可以用形容詞來修飾，表示數量大或小等。
a large number of =large numbers of
如：
In fact, there are a large number of relations between all kinds of characteristic value of quality.
實際上，質量管理過程中的各種質量特性值之間存在著大量的關聯關係。
Market-penetration pricing: setting a low price for a new product in order to attract a large number of buyers and a large market share.

a small number of
如：

the number of
the number of: 表示“.......的數量或者數目”，其中心詞number，後面加名詞的複數形式，但是謂語動詞用單數。
如：
The number of them is getting smaller and smaller, because hunters kill them for their tusks .
它們的數目正在變得越來越少，因為獵人殺掉他們，因為他們的長牙。
The number of events to be contested in each sport is indicated in parentheses .
把事件的數量將在每一個有爭議的運動是在括號內表示。
But the price is that the number of churches is increasing.
不過，付出的代價是這類教會的數目不斷增加。
