據考古發現，琺琅器最早誕生於希臘，希臘普魯斯島出土的公元前12世紀的六枚戒指和雙鷹權杖首，被公認為最原始的掐絲琺琅。到了公元前5—6世紀又曾燒造琺琅器；直到公元6世紀，希臘拜佔廷的琺琅工藝逐漸發展，後至公元10—13世紀初，掐絲琺琅工藝極為興盛。
