I've loved my mother's desk since I was just tall enough to see above the top of it as mother sat doing letters. Standing by her chair, looking at the ink bottle, pens, and whitepaper, I decided that the act of writing must be the most wonderful thing in the world.

Years later, during her final illness, mother kept different things for my sister and brother. "But the desk, "she'd said again, "is for Elizabeth. "

I never saw her get angry, never saw her cry. I knew she loved me; she showed it in action. But as a young girl, I wanted heart-to-heart talks between mother and daughter.

They never happened. And a gulf opened between us. I was “too emotional (易動感情的)”. But she lived "on the surface".

As years passed I had my own family. I loved my mother and thanked her for our happy family. I wrote to her in careful words and asked her to let me know in any way she chose that she did forgive me.

I posted the letter and waited for her answer, None came.

My hope turned to disappointment, then little interest and, finally, peace-it seemed that nothing happened. I couldn't be sure that the letter had even got to mother. I only knew that I had written it, and I could stop trying to make her into someone she was not.

Now the present of her desk told me, as she'd never been able to, that she was pleased that writing was my chosen work. I cleaned the desk carefully and found some papers inside--a photo of my father and a one-page letter, folded(摺疊)and refolded many times.

"Give me an answer, "my letter asked, "in any way you choose." Mother, you always chose the act that speaks louder than words.

Your brain controls everything you do. It makes it possible for you to think, learn, create and feel; to blink(眨眼)and breathe and for your heart to beat-this fantastic control center is your brain.

Can this small grey organ(器官), which weighs less than one and a half kilos, really do so much? Amazingly, your brain contains about 100 billion neurons(神經元)-it would take you over 3, 000 years to count them all. Believe it or not, the activity in your brain never stops. And although one neuron creates only a little electricity, all your neurons together can produce enough electricity to supply a light bulb(燈泡).

So exactly how fast does your brain work? Well, imagine this: a bee lands on your foot. Neurons in your skin send this information to your brain at a speed of more than 240 kilometers per hour. Your brain then uses other neurons to send the message back to your foot to shake the bee off quickly. These neurons can send this information at more than 320 kilometers per hour. No computer has your brain's unbelievable ability to deal with the amount of information coming from your eyes, cars and other sensory organs.

But how does your brain allow you to learn things that you will use in the future? The structure(結構) of your brain changes every time you have a new thought, remember or learn something. For example, riding a bike seems impossible at first, but soon you are able to do it. How? As you practice, your brain sends "bike riding" messages again and again. Soon, the actions are learned and you are able to ride a bike easily from then on.

46.According to the passage, we can think, learn, create and feel, blink and breathe because .

A. our hearts can beat

B. we can control ourselves

C. our brains control everything we do

D. we have small grey organ

47. When shaking the bee off our foot, our brain works in the route(路線)of " “.

A. bee landing on our foot—brain—neurons—shaking the bee off

B. bee landing on our foot—neurons—brain—neurons-shaking the bee off

C. bee landing on our foot—neurons—neurons—shaking the bee off

D. bee landing on our foot—shaking the bee off—neurons—neurons

48. The following statements are false EXCEPT " "

A. One neuron can create enough electricity to supply a light bulb.

B. The structure of our brains changes when we learn something new.

C. We have already create the computers that have the ability to deal with information like our brains.

D. No computer has your brain's unbelievable ability to deal with the amount of information.

49. The meaning of the underlined word "sensory" is_

A. 神經的 B感覺的 C. 運動的 D. 嗅覺的

50. The best title of the passage is" ”.

A. The Secrets of Brain

B. The Structure of Brain

C. Neurons and Brain

D. How Fast We Can Work

C

Everyone has the occasional classmate who hands in his work ahead of time with really beautiful handwriting. Some teachers may cheerfully get the homework by saying "Of course you did it early. I'm sure you've done a good job! "Some teachers may feel annoyed because "The deadline is not until next Friday. "Behind this student's back are tons of whispers from his classmates, "Ugh, he is such an overachiever and it's so annoying... "

If you ask the same student to explain his behavior, he probably says that he is simply "motivated". Such students refuse to call themselves overachievers but prefer "motivated" instead. They want to shy away from the unpleasant term "overachiever" but choose to embrace the word "motivated".

Why is the term "overachiever” used as an insult(侮辱)? Do we not all work hard to achieve our goals? Why does the "motivated" student not proudly call himself an " Overachiever "?

In my personal experience, being called an overachiever in front of my classmates is not pleasant at all. The word is often connected with an unkind smile or sometimes a hint of jealousy(嫉妒). "Overachiever" carries the implied(暗指的)sense which "over" lends it—you have done too much and you have gone too far. Anyway, it is beyond the proper degree and just annoying to those students who refuse to put in the effort themselves and get unhappy with you for doing so.

A student would rather think of himself as an excellent student and it is motivation that drives him to do his best. What is the implied meaning of "motivated"? Connected with positive words like willpower, spirit and determination, the "motivated" student would appear to be competing in an event of the brain Olympics,

Although there are differences in their implications, the student who calls himself "motivated" could actually be a secret overachiever, going over the top for all his work; while the "overachiever" is nothing more than a motivated student, driven by the simple desire to do well and willing to put in time and effort. In fact, the choice lies within the student: to overachieve or not to overachieve; to find the motivation to do well and be driven by it, or to sit back and blame others for overachieving to hide his inability to achieve.

51. According to the passage, overachievers .

A. arc popular with their classmates

B. hand in homework ahead of time

C. are much loved by their teachers

D. look down on others for being slow

52. The word "embrace" in Paragraph 2 probably means" "

A. understand B. explain C. doubt D. accept

53. What can we learn from the passage?

A. Teachers expect students to benefit from their extra work.

B. Students compete with each other to become overachievers.

C. Classmates may laugh at overachievers to hide their inability to achieve.

D. The writer has some pleasant experiences of being called an overachiever.

54. The writer probably agrees that .

A. students shouldn't be encouraged to be overachievers

B. students without motivation will become overachievers

C. motivated students make better progress than overachievers

D. motivated students have something in common with overachievers

55. The passage is most probably taken from .

A. a news report

B. a science book

C. a history book

D. a sports magazine

To many people, the word Hollywood has two meanings. 76 Second, Hollywood also stands for the US movie industry.

Hollywood was just a farmland at the beginning of this century. Early American movies were made in other places; for example, in New York and Chicago.

In 1917 a director was making a movie in Chicago. Because of cold weather, he couldn’t finish the movie. 77 And there he found just the weather and scenery he needed to finish his movie. The director realized that southern California was the perfect place for making movies. The next year his company built a movie studio in Hollywood. 78 Before long nearly all important American movie studios were in Hollywood, Los Angeles.

The next thirty years were Hollywood’s greatest years. Thousands of movies were made, most by a few large and powerful studios. 79

Hollywood also reached its high point in these years. Many famous movie stars, like Bette Davis and Clark Gable, lived in Hollywood.

80 More movies are made outside of Hollywood. Many studios have moved. The movie stars have also moved to areas like Beverly Hills and Malibu.

But visitors to Hollywood today can go to the famous Chinese Theatre and see the footprints and autographs (親筆簽名) of movie stars. They can go down the Walk of Fame, on Hollywood Boulevard, and see the golden stars in the sidewalk.

A. Other companies followed.

B. Today, Hollywood is not what it was.

C. So he took a trip to southern California.

D. Some movies today are still considered great art.

E. Hollywood has changed and now it has become the largest movie history museum

F. Many famous actors have a star on the Walk of Fame..

Nowadays, public square dancing is becoming more and more popular. Most of the public squares are crowded with dancers, especially in the morning and evening. We all agree that public square dancing is a good way to keep healthy, especially for the old. Besides,it is money-saving. But it also causes noise pollution. Many people suffer from the noise caused by the loud music. They can't work, study or sleep well. They feel very angry and some even argue with the dancers.

In my opinion, the dancers should turn down the volume while dancing. In addition, our government should build more public places for them, such as squares and parks. Then people can have fun dancing without disturbing other people.
