Lesson 73 The way to King Street
Last week Mrs. Mills went to London. She does not know London very well, and she lost her way.
Suddenly, she saw a man near a bus stop. “I can ask him the way.” she said to herself.
“Excuse me,” she said. “Can you tell me the way to King Street please?”
The man smiled pleasantly. He did not understand English! He spoke German. He was a tourist.
Then he put his hand into his pocket, and took out a phrasebook.
He opened the book and found a phrase. He read the phrase slowly. “I am sorry,” he said. “I do not speak English.”

Last week Mrs. Mills went to London.
本課繼續學習一般過去時，但側重的是動詞過去式的不規則變化。
本課裡出現的不規則動詞有：
go - went
lose - lost
see - saw
say - said
do - did
understand - understood
speak - spoke
be - was/were
put - put
take - took
find - found
read - read
【注意】
需要注意的是，很多動詞的過去式雖然是不規則的，但其中也有一些其實是有一定規律的。比如以-eep結尾的動詞，其過去式大多是把-eep改為-ept，如：
sleep - slept
sweep - swept
creep - crept
再比如，很多以-end結尾的動詞，其過去式大多是把-end改為-ent，如：
send - sent
spend - spent
bend - bent
當然，這些規則的掌握是建立在掌握了足夠多的不規則動詞之後才能發現的，所以還是需要注意平常多積累不規則動詞的過去式變化。

Suddenly, she saw a man near a bus stop.
注意句中的suddenly，這是本課出現的有關形容詞轉化為副詞的構詞法知識。
課文中出現了三個這樣的詞語，即：
suddenly
pleasantly
slowly
從構詞方式來看，這三個詞都是由“形容詞+後綴-ly”來構成副詞的。即：
sudden+ly
pleasant+ly
slow+ly
所以，對於這類副詞，只需要知道其形容詞的含義即可。
當然，需要注意的是，後綴-ly加在形容詞後是構成副詞的，但它也可以加在名詞之後，只是此時它所構成的不是副詞，而是形容詞。比如：
friendly: friend+ly
lovely: love+ly
weekly: week+ly
