一、如何提出解決方案？
2018年11月3日的《經濟學人》封面文章講到了中期選舉背景下的美國政治現狀。自特朗普上臺後，美國政壇烏煙瘴氣，雖然民主依然強大，但有很多問題亟待解決，為此，《經濟學人》提出瞭解決方案：
①What is to be done? ②Just as American politics did not sour overnight, so the route forward is by many small steps, beginning with next week’s elections.
翻譯：
應該做什麼呢？正如美國政治不是一夜間變得烏煙瘴氣，所以前進的道路需要很多小步驟，首先是下一週的（中期）選舉。
本段以問句"What is to be done"開頭，暗示了接下來要講measures / solution.
②句中有一個大結構：Just as..., so (too)...
這是一個用來比較兩個事物的表達，意思是“正如...，...也...”，比如下面這個句子：
Just as the body needs regular exercise, so too an engine needs to be run at regular intervals.
正如身體需要經常鍛鍊，引擎也需要定期發動。
文中Just as American politics did not sour overnight, so the route forward is by many small steps是說，正如美國政治不是一夜之間變得烏煙瘴氣的，因此前進的道路也需要許多小步驟。即，不能太激進(radical)，而應漸進(gradual)。
sour是一個很好用的小詞，它最基本的意思是“酸臭的、餿的”。“酸臭”是我們都不喜歡的一個味道，因此也常引申為“不好的、糟糕的”，比如 go / turn sour，既可以表示食物“變酸”，也可以表示關係、態度變得“糟糕、惡劣”，國際政治上常見的一個場景就是：
Relations between America and China have turned sour following the trade war.
sour也可以作動詞，表示“變壞”，比如：
The atmosphere at the house soured.
屋子裡的氣氛不對了。
文中American politics did not sour overnight可以理解成，美國政治不是一夜間變得烏煙瘴氣的。
Sour給表達添了一種嗅覺感，生動而又深刻。
我們可以從中提煉出一個寫作句型：
What is to be done? Just as A did not sour overnight, so the route forward is by many small steps, beginning with B
（A表示具體的對象，B表示具體措施，sour可以根據具體的場景而變化）
比如環境汙染問題：
What is to be done? Just as the environment was not polluted overnight, so the route forward is by many small steps, beginning with the introduction of garbage-recycling system.
翻譯：
那該怎麼辦呢？環境不是一夜之間汙染的，因此我們要採取多種漸進措施，首先是實施垃圾循環系統。
再比如食品安全問題：
What is to be done? Just as public worries did not crop up overnight, so the route forward is by many small steps, beginning with the authorities' tighter regulation of food.
翻譯：
那該怎麼辦呢？公眾擔憂不是一夜之間出現的，因此我們要採取多種漸進措施，首先是政府要加強對食品的監管。
再比如滴滴安全事件：
What is to be done? Just as Didi's safety scandals did not emerge overnight, so the route forward is by many small steps, beginning with the company's stricter screening of drivers.
翻譯：
那該怎麼辦呢？滴滴安全事件不是一夜之間出現的，因此我們要採取多種漸進措施，首先是公司應加強對司機的審查。
當我們提出解決方案時，總擺脫不了"there are three ways to...""First, we should..."等單調乏味的句式，現在我們可以用"What is to be done? Just as A did not sour overnight, so the route forward is by many small steps, beginning with B"來替換，無論從句法結構、內容，還是用詞上，都更勝一籌。
