哪些你熟悉的英文俗語源於《聖經》？（四）

在前幾期的推送中，給大家介紹了一部分源於《聖經》的習語，我們先回顧一下這些習語：A leopard cannot change his spots.

喻指：江山易改，本性難移。 You are the apple of my eye. 喻指：你是我的摯愛，或你是我最珍貴的人。Moses (人名）摩西，喻指：領導者，領袖。a land flowing with milk and honey 喻指：富饒之地，魚米之鄉。bone of the bone and flesh of the flesh 喻指：血濃於水，血肉相連或思想上的團結一致。the garden of Eden喻指：樂園;人間天堂。forbidden fruit喻指：破壞規矩或做了不應做之事而得到的滿足。Babel 喻指：摩天樓，不切實際的計劃、空想；嘈雜的地方。as curious as Lot’s wife此言喻指：好奇心過重。Noah’s ark 此言喻指：為逃避滅頂之災所建造的處所。

今天我們繼續跟大家分享那些源於《聖經》的習語：

1. make bricks without straw 沒有稻草卻要做磚

語出：《聖經》舊約的Exodus《出埃及記》，原文為：That same day Pharaoh commanded the taskmasters of the people, as well as supervisors, “You shall no longer give the people straw to make bricks; let them go and gather straw for themselves. （NRSV）

而《聖經》欽定本的原文為：Ye shall no more give the people straw to make brick, as heretofore: let them go and gather straw for themselves. (KJV)

《聖經·出埃及記》中有這樣的記載：從前以色列人在埃及常常給埃及人做苦力，為埃及人乾和泥、制磚等粗活。當時，磚頭是用稻草、貝殼、木炭等混合製成的。有一次，埃及法老要以色列人用和平時一樣多的稻草製造出更多的磚，以色列人終於被迫逃出埃及。

如今，制磚當然不再用稻草，不過make bricks without straw成為一個常用習語留傳了下來，，意思是：to do a job without the necessary materials（作無米之炊）。

此言喻指： 做無米之炊

E.g: One cannot make bricks without straw. 巧婦難為無米之炊。

2. firstborn of Egypt

直譯為：埃及人的長子

語出：語出：《聖經》舊約的Exodus《出埃及記》，原文為：At night the Lord struck down all the fist born in the land of Egypt, from the firstborn of Pharaoh who sat on his throne to the firstborn of the prisoner who was in the dungeon (地牢), and all the firstborn of the livestock.（NRSV）

據《聖經》記載:埃及法老王因他心裡剛硬，不肯聽從摩西和亞倫屢次的請求，讓以色列民離開埃及地，（神就吩咐摩西、亞倫在法老面前多行神蹟奇事，用十大災難降臨到埃及。其中第十大災難就是“長子之災”，神以末次之災來警告法老，就是約到半夜的時候，他出去巡行埃及遍地，從寶座的法老，直到磨子後的婢女所有的長子，以及一切頭生的牲畜，盡都殺了，在埃及遍地必有大哀號，無一家不死一個人。長子是一家人的代表，古時候的人最尊重長子，所以這災使埃及上下人民分外憂懼。當初法老要怎樣除滅了神的長子－－神的選民以色列人，現在神也要除滅法老的長子和他的軍兵。

此言喻指：巨大的災難，特別的不幸和哀傷

2. to sleep with one’s fathers 與列祖同睡

語出：《聖經》舊約的Samuel《撒母耳記下》，原文為 “When your days are fulfilled and you lie down with your ancestors, I will raise up you offspring after you, who shall come forth from you body, and I will establish his kingdom.”（NRSV）

而《聖經》欽定本的原文為：And when thy days be fulfilled, and thou shalt sleep with thy fathers, I will set up thy seed after thee, which shall proceed out of thy bowels, and I will establish his kingdom. (KJV)

此言喻指：與世長辭

E.g: Every man will sleep with his fathers in the end. 每人都將會與世長辭。
