Tiffany Brown, studies Chinese at Peking University (2019)(在北京大學學習中文,2019)Answered 7h agoIf you’re a traveler that likes exotic lands and cultures different from your own, there is no place on Earth as “faraway” as China. Different smells, different language, different colors, different mindframe. If your idea of travel is relaxing in a resort eating club sandwiches, China may not be for you. For those adventurous and open-minded enough to give China a shot, chances are they return home with some great stories and a changed outlook on life.I visited China a few times before settling here to study Chinese. I can add some information on why myself and my foreign friends here love China so much.China is a country that gets better and better each day that you become familiar with the customs and way of life. If you’re planning on going to China, there are online resources you can download to familiarize yourself with China before you go.Here are some positive things that I’ve learned from my time in China:The “Shame factor” is more effective than aggressive law enforcement. In China all kinds of situations are set for high crime: rich and poor living next to each other, dark spaces near train and bus stations busy throughout the evening, crowded areas with people bumping into one another, pockets vulnerable. However, the crime rate is incredibly low. The shame of being caught for a crime carries repercussions for the entire family. Crime and rebellion are not glamorized in China. You may see police in the background, but rarely patrolling aggressively. There is actually a lot of freedom in your daily life. In China, the energy at night isn’t capped by closing times. Bars venues and food stalls can stay open practically all night. Restaurants are filled 24/7 with people enjoying themselves. There are no laws prohibiting these kinds of activities. Foreigners can enjoy themselves without having to show ID to gain entrance, or being shoo’ed out of a closing venue at last call.Convenience. In China, apps make ordering food, a ride, a bike, anything you might desire, quickly possible. The amazing public transportation can whisk you around a city or region in no time, with very little waiting. If you need a bottle of water or have a craving for some tasty duck neck, chances are you will walk past it on the next block. In America, you often need a car to get around and collect what you need and want. In China, with its densely-populated cities, it’s all at your fingertips.Eating Should be a Communal Event, Not an Individual Event. In China, the food your order will likely be shared between everyone at the table. The menu is often on the wall, so you don’t waste time flipping through the pages quietly. Decisions are made together, food is shared and harmony ensues. The other people at the table will ask what kind of flavors you enjoy, and make a compromise to make sure everyone is happy. At some street stalls, you’re even sat at a table with strangers, sharing a hot pot and passing sauces back and forth. The adventures of dining out are something that I greatly miss when I’m back in the USA.These qualities of China and Chinese culture combine to make the country an incredible place to travel or live. Like every place, there are downsides to life in China. However, coming from the USA, there is so much to learn and experience that it can really change your life!4.7k Views · View Upvoters

Jarome Matthew, Over 5 years operating company in Beijing, China, married a Chinese woman(在北京運營公司超過5年,娶了一箇中國妻子)Answered Jan 5Short answer: because their own countries are so bad!The reasons Africans and Russians are flocking to China are obvious so let's focus on western countries.Baby boomers have been depleting resources of most of the countries on the planet in a single generation, leaving absolutely nothing for future generations, polluting the planet to the point where some areas will become unable to support life, and leaving the cleanup to future generations, they support radical femenism and multiculturalism to the point where men are unable to find wives and keep families, and western culture may be in danger of extinction. They exported most of the industry and farming work overseas for short-term profit and allowed unrestricted foreign investment to shoot home prices to astronomical figures destroying future generation's chances at finding work and having a stable economy. They also destroyed educational and academic institutions in innumerable social and political experiments that crippled at least two generations and promote the kind of banking and economics that have put the most powerful country on Earth into the most debt ever seen in human history, causing massive economic recessions that affect the entire world. There's not much left in the western world anymore for anyone who's not a boomer or super rich. Get out now and have a chance at a good life in Asia!

Ralph S, lives in Shanghai (2014-present)Answered Sep 6, 2017Sorry but most of the answers here made me cringe and wondering if you have been to the wrong country… Totally contrary to my experience.I am originally from Germany, but live in Shanghai for over three years, married to a Chinese wife. I travel frequently all over China. Some of the points here described as good are actually horrible for me.I rarely ate anything that i would eat a second time. Most dished just make me wanna puke by the looks of it. Not to mention hygiene. Don’t tell me Chinese people don’t eat cats and dogs anymore, because they do. And there are far more disgusting dishes socially accepted. Basic rule, the rarer the species, the more perverted the thought eating that is, the more desirable it is.The vast majority of people are rude, un-polite, loud, annoying, with no manners, cruel, would do anything to get rich, not very educated, lack common sense or basic logic (especially in traffic), racist, anti-social and uncivilized - basically no respect for anything and lacking every part that defines humans in my book. They live in their own little world and don’t care about or notice their surroundings. If you know their education system and parenting, that might explain a lot. Those “low suzhi” people are spoiling and ruining everything China has to offer. If you are approached in English and friendly, you better prepare to get scammed.Without the exploitation of cheap labor and the force marriage of foreign companies into joint ventures, you would be literally be standing in rice fields. The only things China is good at is reverse engineering, copying and mass production. That is not a cliche. The growth, which China is so proud of, would not have happend without foreign technology and knowledge. The adoption and development is not happening as fast as you might expect, due to no. 4.Chinese products have only as much effort put into it that is necessary to convince you to buy it. If it falls apart the next day or kills you, doesn’t matter. Being said, it is not that they cannot produce quality products, they just don’t want to and don’t feel ashamed about it. Basically they take something already on the market and do it cheaper. Hardly any own innovations. The products praised here are foreign backed.Really don’t get me wrong, not everything is bad. Some good points have already been mentioned. Im obviously still living here. But i think this thread gives a wrong impression and certainly not every foreigner thinks China is good. Even the more educated Chinese are embarrassed and ashamed about the above issues. There is always a good and a bad side, you just trade your priorities.

Katie Pedro, VP Operations, China at KSV eSports (2018-present)Updated Mar 18A2A. Many answers gave by expats who stayed in China, probably because they like to be in China. My examples are those who do not want to stay in China but still think China is good. When I met my husband, he had been in China for almost 2 years, crying his eyes out wanting to leave. His German boss concluded that it was because he was lonely, having a girlfriend would solve the problem. He speaks 5 European languages fluently, but have difficulty to learn Chinese. He didn’t like Chinese food, and not particularly attracted to East Asians. Anyway his boss set up a date for him. So we met and married. He stayed for another 5 years before moved to USA. Now he missed China and wanted to come back.
