複合句就像孕婦一樣，孕婦是懷孕的婦女肚中有人，複合句是句中有句（在日語裡，複合句被叫做包孕句），如下圖。

複合句由一個主句和一個或一個以上的從句構成。主句是全句的主體，通常可以獨立存在；從句由從屬連詞引導，從句則是一個句子成分，不能獨立存在。從句須由一個關聯詞引導，關聯詞起到聯繫從句和主句的作用。
一、 從句的種類
從句包括（1）名詞性從句（主語從句、賓語從句、表語從句和同位語從句）、（2）形容詞性從句（定語從句）和（3）副詞性從句（狀語從句）共三大類從句。（詳見語法100講第23講、第30講、第44講、第46講、第50講、第56講、第57講、第58講、第65講、第68講、第72講、第76講、第77講、第79講、第83講第92講、第100講）。
二、從句的引導詞
1、從屬連詞（引出主語從句、賓語從句、表語從句和狀語從句等）
that（無意義）；whether（是否）；if（假如；是否）although/though（雖然；儘管）；because(因為）；when（當…時候）；before（在……前）；after（在……後）；since（既然；自從）；as（正如；儘管；一邊；由於）；while（在……期間）as soon as（一……就……）；as long as（只要）；as if（好像）等。
Whether or not we’re successful, we can be sure that we did our best..（whether引導主語從句）
We all know that China is famous for the Great Wall. （that引導賓語從句）
If it doesn’t rain tomorrow, we will go climbing the mountain. （if引導條件狀語從句）

2、連接代詞（引出主語從句、表語從句和賓語從句）
who, whom, which, what, whose等
Who breaks the law should be punished. （what引導主語從句）
I really didn’t know whom he was waiting for. （whom引導賓語從句）
3、連接副詞（引出賓語從句、表語從句和狀語從句）
when, where, why, how
When they got there, the film had been on for ten minutes.
Do you know why he was late for work?
When the dentist at last removed the cotton wool from my mouth, I was able to tell him that he had pulled out the wrong tooth.
4、關係代詞（引出定語從句）
who, whom, whose, which, that
The man that I served is wearing a hat.
He says he is the man who bought these books.
5、關係副詞（引出定語從句）
when, where, why
Meanwhile, my tongue was busy searching out the hole where the tooth had been.
