China is a marvel in the orient. The reason being that when you look back 30 plus years ago. You could have never anticipated how far China would come without assistance from the west like most countries rely on.

For one it's safe toive in in china than a lot of countries considering the population densiry.

Getting everything is convenient accept documents which can be a pain in China. The people are usually friendly and open to foreigners, however the approach some Chinese use may seem overwhelming to some foreigners and ovwraggresive though they mean well.

I recent times China has opened up a lot to foreigners and it's easier to work, register and live in big cities.

Travel is another amazing thing China is good at. There are so many travel destinations with great attractiins. Not ideal to travel on a major Chinese holiday because the number of people can be overwheel.

Transportation in China I'd say is on par with developed countries and in some instances more advance than even developed countries forinstance the high speed rail system with over 2500 high speed trains which makes traveling across China super fast and convenient.

Come to the negatives, not everyone who comes to China would love to stay for too long. First foreigners always remain foreigners and till now there's no way to naturalized as a Chinese citizen. Working with Chinese can sometimes be frustrating mostly due to language barriers and cultural differences which I think every country has that.

Some very few chines who are deeply nationalist can sometimes go a bit crazy when they thing foreigners aren't respecting Chinese like the United airline insidwnt, but this number is very very small. Most Chinese don't care much especially younger ones who are more open minded than older generations.

Chinese as a language is also very interesting although it's very hard to learn.

Overall China is a country with great people, extremely hard working, great social values (face), and has rich culture which is very interest.

We adopted a Chinese boy from Xiamen, China and are adopting our second from Tianjin within a few months.

We spent two full weeks there. Here are some of the impressions I had -

1 - I felt the overall country was very safe from a violent crime perspective, especially for foreigners. I never felt in danger in any of the cities I spent time in (Xiamen, Fuzhou and Guangzhou). I can’t say the same thing about the driving, however! The drivers overall were just awful compared to the US.

2 - The cities appeared to be very clean, although not at clean as most US and Northern European cities. The main waterway and lake in Fuzhou just looked pretty polluted. The streets were pretty clean and the buildings were pretty well maintained. Just not quite as aesthetically pleasing as most places in the US.

3 - I loved the food! I know this is so cliche, but Chinese food really was the best.

4 - The people I met were very courteous and respectful.

5 - I appreciate the long, dark and somewhat difficult history the people have lived through. I had no idea how bad World War 2 was for the Chinese until I started to read more into it when I was in China.

Overall we love China and the people. We are happy to have China as part of our hearts and home.

Mixed impressions.

Country seems like very beautiful and varied. Different timezones, cultural expressions, climates.

Hardworking people, helpful and well schooled. Aiming for the number One medal, always.

That's also what's scary. From the outside, I have never been to China, the people give the impression of total lethargy. Like they have been kicked down so many times before by the top dogs, that not resisting, not having their own opinions has become the norm. The state makes up your mind for you they know what's best. That kind of thing.

Brilliant in many ways, but at the same time conditioned into total Group Think.

I hope that I have the wrong impression in this matter, doubt it. Just my politicallly colored glasses, I think the Chinese as a people are as great as anyone else.

People are people wherever they live: one blood, one world.

I love China!

I lived in Chenghai, Shantou a couple of years ago when I worked there as an English Teacher. I arrived in the country with little idea of what to expect and I was pleasantly surprised by what I found. The people are gorgeous - friendly and helpful and eager to learn. Oh, except for some (you know who I’m talking about, Mr. Rickshaw Man who consistently overcharged us and laughed about it).

The most China image in my mind? Sitting with 40 Chinese teachers in the staff dining room and sharing meals (at least five different dishes daily, cooked by one lone chef in a teeny tiny kitchen), everyone talking and laughing and using chopsticks and insisting we eat “more, more!”

China impresses me most by its people. So open with their thoughts, so anxious to help, to broaden their horizons, and to fit in with Western standards (That last one is a little sad. They shouldn’t have to fit in - they are perfect as they are.)

What didn’t I like? It was very hot and steamy where we lived, with temperatures up to 40 degrees Celsius and high humidity. No thanks!

Over the past year I've had a lot of encounters with Chinese people through work, eventually leading to me moving temporarily to Beijing.

I wrote a thorough answer about what do Israeli's think of Chinese people which includes my first encounter.

In my answer I share my experience of a few clients I was working with. I'll tell more about my first face to face encounter with them.

I went to pick them up at one of the Hotels in Tel Aviv, As mentioned they were 4 guys ages 25-30.

We went to eat at a very nice meat restaurant, this was before I ever ate in a Chinese restaurant, so we didn't really know what to do when they asked me to order for the table and share. (After eating out in China, I now know that this is a much funner and nicer way to eat out)

We ordered some Whiskey and they took a little sip and left it for the rest of the meal, they said it's too strong but that's nothing compared to Baijo.

As I Said in the other answer, for 2 of them at least, it was the very first time they used a knife and fork. and it was funny seeing them trying to eat with it. Poking the meat with the knife, putting it in your mouth while trying to avoid getting cut. (This is a steak knife yeah?)

We talked a lot, two of them spoke pretty good English, and the other two not so much. The two guys who did spoke English complimented me for being Jewish, and as I said in the other answer, claimed Jewish people are the smartest in the world, read a lot of books etc.

I recommended them a few things to see in Tel Aviv, and they seemed really nice people, a bit shy, but super friendly.

Oh, and there was one thing I found really odd, We were outside one of the club areas in Tel Aviv, and one of them, a married guy, picked up one of those business cards with a girl and a phone number, asking me if he should call it later tonight.

I said no, I felt kind of awkward.

On the positive side: In China, relationships mean everything and they are very strong once formed. People will do almost anything for a close relationship, especially family.

On the negative side: In China, there is absolutely, positively no such a thing as common courtesy towards anonymous people or the environment.

My impression is that Chinese are hardworking industrious people. They are intelligent and headed places fast. They work so hard and so long they do not even know where the Americas are, or care.

They are very busy, friendly family oriented people. They must know everything, they manufacture all the world's goods.

China doesn't deserve praise in my eyes.

I would never want to live there. I don't care if they have nice infrastructure. Turns out that's very easy to do.

I traveled in China for two and a half months. It was very interesting to see the differences between each province.

In general the people are very polite and mind their own business. The good food is sometimes hard to find, but its definitely there. Its a great place to go on vacation because on the one hand there is a very relaxing environment, full of crazy and amazing experiences, and on the other hand, its a country full of history and culture

Clare Celea, British, once moderate now leaning left, mother of one

My impression is that it's a massive country, extremely diverse culturally, ethnically and linguistically, with an astoundingly rich history.

I also have the impression that nearly everything Westerners tend to believe about China is either entirely wrong, or at best incomplete. My impression is that I know very little about the real China.

Mark Schneider, studied at Uppsala University

You can really feel that China is also the "tool-shop" of the world. China has become a master of mass production for consumer goods. 25 years ago everyone asked why has this been made in China - is it bad? Now its the other way around, why has this not been made in China - so it can be good and cost efficient!

Brian Greenhow, Boring Aussie

Honestly, I don't really have any impression of China, neither positive or negative.

I don't really hear a great deal about a China though, I don't see much in the news. I haven't conversed with many Chinese online either. I've never traveled there.

Same feeling when you see a beauty escorting a mobster. What a waste. Really beautifull land and nice people, but in the wrong hands.

Dave Lanner

Phone payment &transportation are super awesome.people are nice, some cities are polluted but some are very beautiful.some are very modern ,some are not that developed or poor at all.new generations are open-minded.China is changing very fast in a good way

Andrés Parzanese, studied at Zhongnan University of Economics and Law

Super, super interesting country with an even more interesting future.

China is strange and different, it’s a one of a kind place, its culture is strong.

China developed very fast all of a sudden, and so certain things haven’t kept up to that speed, I think that once those things finally catch up we will see what role China will play in the international stage.

I think China has done, for the most part, a great job until now with its own issues, I don’t think it’s an easy country to manage.

I think China has surpassed the West in a few aspects, especially apps and their integration on so many levels.

It’s interesting when you see the Chinese copy something from the West and end up making something better out of it.

I love WeChat.

China’s transportation system is superb, crowded but superb.

The best thing about China is the safety, props for that and keeping the country so gun free, it must be very tough to accomplish.

China is hugely misunderstood, but it also seems to misunderstand others.

I’ll be honest, for all the Chinese I can speak I’m not a fan its overall sound, but it’s definitely is a beautiful language, its expression capability is awesome.

Lastly, I feel like China is becoming increasingly paranoid.

Juan Gallardo, Software Engineer

So my answer comes from having never been to China. So just reliying on the little that I know from what I have read on the internet or seen on TV. These are just random thoughts.

Very beautiful scenery. I think of mountains, rivers, forests.

I imagine a lof of factories with a lot of pollution towards the industrial cities.

I picture very busy marketplaces with a lot of seafood

Very lively cities that would be fun

Crowded apartments

I would picture overall to be safe

It seems that the high majority of people would be very nice, industrious, and intelligent.

I don't know how much of that is true. But I am just answering in context of what I imagine China to be like.

Belvedrina Terzic, economist, linguist, artist, freelance translator, fashion designer, linux geek

Since my country is full of Chinese who sell cheap crap everywhere, I guess they would be in quite a bad situation back in China (because my country is really a mess, so if you come here for better life, you must be really screwed). Probably extremely low wages (even for the living standard over there) probably like Bangladesh, India..Beautiful nature. Economy highly dependent on export (especially US, but also Europe). Overpopulated. And that's about it.

Dan Tinianow, Have seen more of China and spent more time there than most westerners.

As best I can recall, my first impression of really being in China, not just the airport, was "These drivers are crazy!" A pedestrian has to be a lot more careful in China compared to other countries I've lived in or visited...
