43 長拜過蘇州
從湖州復起香叩拜如前，沿途人見之鹹生敬仰。人人合掌唸佛，或隨喜禮拜，抵蘇州城，信仰三寶善男信女甚多，皈依者亦復不少。三三五五恭敬歡迎，絡繹不斷，一時傳為奇聞焉。
宣化偈曰：
善財南參越百城，
煙水依稀判鴻濛。
公朝五臺湖蘇界，
善男信女匍匐行。
43 Continuing to bow at length and passing through Su Chou
Leaving the city of Hu Chou, the Master again began by first offering incense and then continued to bow. When people along the roadside saw him, they were all respectful, placing their palms together and reciting the Buddha’s name. Some happily followed along, bowing behind the Master. Reaching Su Chou, the Master encountered many cheerful men and faithful women who believed in the Triple Jewel. A considerable number of these people received the three refuges from him. All types of people respectfully welcomed him and at that time the wonderful news of his arrival continued to spread quickly.
The verse says:
The Youth Good Wealth visited the south, more than one hundred cities.
Through mist and waters, he pursued the great and mysterious.
As the Master journeyed to Wu T’ai Mountain through the regions of Hu and Su Chou,
Good men and faithful women went down on their hands and knees.
4 常州分別獨向前
自普陀山法華庵起香之四禪人，中途覺得艱難，屢告退，公婉詞勸之，令勿生退志。至此四人決意告別，公觀其退意已定，只可聽之，嗚呼！世尊雪山修道，四從者尚皆辭去，道侶不易也。
宣化偈曰：
大任降世苦其行，
餓其體膚勞其筋。
無黨無偏無依賴，
自行自拜自登程。
44 Parting company at Chang Chou and going on alone
The four Ch’an monks from Fa Hua Temple on P’u T’uo Montain, who carried incense for the Master, began to feel the adversities and diffficulties of the journey, and often spoke of returning. The Master exhorted them with kind words so that they would not speak of losing their resolve. At that, the foursome decided they would definitely part company with him. Upon hearing their staunch intent to withdraw, the Master did nothing but listen. Alas! Even when the world Honored One cultivated in the Himalayas, his four attendants also left him. To have companions along the Way is not easy at all.
The verse says:
Shouldering a great mission, he underwent bitter suffering.
He endured hunger and continued to strain his muscles.
He was impartial and free of bias since he had no point of dependence.
Isolated in practice, bowing by himself, he forged ahead.
