My mother got remarried," I said.
"That doesn't sound so complex," he disagreed, but he was suddenly sympathetic. "When did that happen?"
"Last September." My voice sounded sad, even to me.
"And you don't like him," Edward surmised, his tone still kind.
"No, Phil is fine. Too young, maybe, but nice enough."
"Why didn't you stay with them?"
I couldn't fathom his interest, but he continued to stare at me with penetrating eyes, as if my dull life's story was somehow vitally important.
"Phil travels a lot. He plays ball for a living." I half-smiled.
"Have I heard of him?" he asked, smiling in response.
"Probably not. He doesn't play well. Strictly minor league. He moves around a lot."
"And your mother sent you here so that she could travel with him." He said it as an assumption again, not a question.
My chin raised a fraction. "No, she did not send me here. I sent myself."
His eyebrows knit together. "I don't understand," he admitted, and he seemed unnecessarily frustrated by that fact.
I sighed. Why was I explaining this to him? He continued to stare at me with obvious curiosity.

"我母親又嫁人了，"我說。
"這聽上去不是很複雜嘛，"他表示了異議，但他突然很同情地問了一句，"什麼時候的事兒？"
"去年9月份。"我的聲音聽上去很傷心，就連我自己聽了都這麼覺得。
"你不喜歡他？"愛德華猜測道，他的語氣依然很友好。
"不，菲爾很不錯。或許，太年輕了一點，但真的夠好了。"
"你幹嗎不跟他們在一起呢？"
我琢磨不透他的興趣所在，但他依舊用那雙具有洞察力的眼睛在目不轉睛地盯著我，好像我單調乏味的生活經歷極其重要似的。
"菲爾老東奔西跑。他以打球為生。"我似笑非笑地說道。
"我聽說過他嗎？"他問，回了我一個微笑。
"很可能沒有。他的球打得不好。嚴格說來還在小聯盟 混。他老是在東奔西跑的。"
"所以你母親就要你到這裡來了，這樣她就可以跟著到處跑了。"他又在主觀臆斷，而不是在問。
我稍稍仰起頭："不，不是她要我來這裡的，是我自己要來的。"
他的兩簇眉毛擠到了一起。"我不明白。"他承認道，而且他似乎對這個事實感到很失望，其實大可不必。
我嘆了一口氣。我幹嗎要跟他說這些呢？他仍舊目不轉睛地盯著我，眼裡充滿了明顯的好奇。
