4月16日，斯坦福大學發表公開聲明，宣告斯坦福 大學教授沒有參與南科大賀建奎的基因編輯嬰兒項目，與該項目也沒有科研、經費、以及組織上的任何關聯。也就是說，斯坦福教授在賀建奎基因編輯嬰兒風波中，完全是清白的。
據紐約時報報道，這份聲明，是斯坦福大學對此前南科大校長陳十一院士致信斯坦福大學校長的公開回應。在這封信件中，陳校長指出賀建奎博士後導師、斯坦福大學Stephen Quake教授在賀建奎基因編輯嬰兒項目中起重要的指導和推動作用，包括實驗準備、論文發表、輿論宣傳、和公關策略等：
“Prof. Stephen Quake provided instructions to the preparation and implementation of the experiment, the publication of papers, the promotion and news release, and the strategies to react after the news release,”
陳校長進一步指出，Quake教授的這些行為，違反國際公認的學術倫理、必須予以譴責：
“violated the internationally recognized academic ethics and codes of conduct, and must be condemned.”
去年十一月，賀建奎宣佈世界首例基因編輯嬰兒在中國誕生，掀起軒然大波。今年一月，新華社發佈廣東省“基因編輯嬰兒事件”調查組結論：
“現已初步查明，該事件系南方科技大學副教授賀建奎為追逐個人名利，自籌資金，蓄意逃避監管，私自組織有關人員，實施國家明令禁止的以生殖為目的的人類胚胎基因編輯活動。”
調查組特別指出，境外人員參與了這一項目：
“2016年6月開始，賀建奎私自組織包括境外人員參加的項目團隊，蓄意逃避監管，使用安全性、有效性不確切的技術，實施國家明令禁止的以生殖為目的的人類胚胎基因編輯活動。”
由於賀建奎曾在斯坦福大學從事博士後研究，並一直與其導師Quake教授保持聯繫，很多人自然將境外人員聯想到Quake教授身上。這個公開聲明表明，斯坦福大學認為他們的教職員工不在這些境外人員之列。這個鍋他們不背。
在斯坦福公開聲明發表前，紐約時報曾專訪Quake教授並做專題報道，闡述Quake 教授立場。這一立場在斯坦福聲明之中再次體現：即Quake教授最初對賀建奎基因編輯嬰兒項目表示反對與關切，在賀建奎不聽勸阻執意推進項目的時候要求他遵循科學倫理和規範，並得到賀建奎保證這一項目通過了倫理監管部門的審批：
“The review found that the Stanford researchers expressed serious concerns to Dr. He about his work. When Dr. He did not heed their recommendations and proceeded, Stanford researchers urged him to follow proper scientific practices, which included identifying an unmet medical need, securing informed consent, obtaining Institutional Review Board (IRB) approval and publishing the research in a peer-reviewed journal. Finally, the reviewers found that Stanford researchers were told by Dr. He that he had secured IRB approvals for his work.”
在接受採訪的時候，Quake教授向紐約時報公開了他和賀建奎這幾年的電子郵件來往，顯示在基因編輯嬰兒項目的每一個重要時間點，賀建奎都向Quake教授通報，如成功懷孕、嬰兒出生等等：
據瞭解，斯坦福調查小組由兩人組成，一人為斯坦福大學教授，一人為校外調查人員。調查結果顯示：
“Based on all of the available information, the reviewers found that the Stanford researchers were not participants in Dr. He’s research regarding genome editing of human embryos for intended implantation and birth and that they had no research, financial or organizational ties to this research. ”
據報道，南科大已經與賀建奎解除合同。
科研千萬條，規範第一條。學生不聽話，老師兩行淚。。。
