嚴復先生曾在《天演論·譯例言》裡首次提出“信、達、雅”翻譯標準。“信”指的是“忠實”，“達”指的是“流暢”，“雅”指的是“爾雅”，就是要有文采。 （理論雖不完美，但此文不涉及缺點）
英文中確實有很多單詞是一箇中文字或者詞表達不清楚的，很多時候，如果強行將字典中的中文意思套用於句子的翻譯，則會使句子看起來很彆扭。不僅不流暢，而且還會缺失文采，所以很多時候，就必須要藉助各種翻譯技巧，讓文章看起來流暢有文采。
如句子：Two distincts，distinct none
兩個差別，差別沒有？（錯誤）
可判可別，難分難解（錢鍾書先生）
如下列所提出的幾個單詞和部分列句，如果用對應中文意思沒辦法翻譯，那就變著法兒翻。但是，個人翻譯水平不佳，有些單詞翻譯成中文還是會欠缺韻味。
counterpart
這個詞在網站字典上給出的翻譯是：指職務相當的人或者作用相當的事物。但如果要用具體的詞去翻譯的話，需要借鑑語境，不同的句子中可以翻譯為不同的意思。
例如：
- Your right hand is the counterpart of your left hand
- 你的左手和你的右手互相配對
- In London， the counterpart of the New York subway is called the tube
- 在倫敦，優越的地鐵被稱為“隧道”
- These writers, like most of their male counterparts, were amateur historians
- 如多數男作家一樣，女作家也同樣是業餘歷史愛好者
- Their Secretary of State is the counterpart of our foreign minister
- 他們的國務卿相當於我們的外交部長
delicate
exquisite, fine, or subtle in quality, character, construction, etc；having a soft or fragile beauty
中文給出的翻譯是：微妙的;熟練的;纖弱的;易損的。但更覺得如果這個詞 a delicate girl就覺得要翻譯出林黛玉的感覺，“態生兩靨之愁，嬌襲一身之病。淚光點點，嬌喘微微。閒靜時如姣花照水，行動處似弱柳扶風。心較比干多一竅，病如西子勝三分。”
如：
- I've always been attracted to very feminine, delicate women.
- 我總是被十分嬌柔纖弱的女子吸引。 （更偏向於小鳥依人，弱柳扶風的感覺）
- delicate color色澤素雅 微妙的顏色 （在這裡表達顏色的淡雅）
- a delicate piece of embroidery 精緻的刺繡品（東西的精緻）
- a critic’s delicate perception 一個評論家敏銳的洞察力（敏銳）
harangue
a long, passionate, and vehement speech , esp. one delivered before a public gathering.
強調是指在公眾場合，帶有激烈感情的長篇演講
如：
- It is not a big deal but I don’t want to have a big harangue about it
- 沒什麼大不了的，但是我不想和他多說 （這裡簡單翻譯為爭吵，翻譯為長篇演講就很怪）
- 《飄》裡的一句話：The eyes of the neighbors were expectantly upon him as they settled themselves in easier positions for a long harangue.
- 鄰居們用期待的眼光看著他，同時調整了一個姿勢，站的隨便一點，等著聽他講話。（翻譯為等著聽他長篇大論，情感就變了，而且在這裡顯得過於正式過於激烈）
understate
英文解釋：
1.To state with less completeness or truth than seems warranted by the facts.
2.To express with restraint or lack of emphasis, especially ironically or for rhetorical effect.
中文給出的意思是：很有節制地陳述或者表達（某事物）；少說少報（某數目等），但是在文章或者電影裡面很少這樣翻譯，不然會顯得太笨拙。比如下面的例句裡翻譯為“低調，簡約，淡化”等等
如：
- I like your understated sense of fashion
- 我喜歡你低調奢華有內涵
- I think “understated”was what they are going for
- 我想“簡約樸素”是他們追求的效果
- The club understated the true value of the deal
- 這個俱樂部低估了交易的真正價值
- This would seriously understate his impact on the world
- 這會大大地淡化他對世界的影響
overshadow
除了常見的籠罩，使...相形見絀等，
如：
- Heavy clouds overshadowed the mountain
- 厚厚的雲層遮掩了大山 （其實翻譯為遮蓋還是不行）
- He overshadowed all his comrades
- 他使所有的同僚都黯然失色 （感覺使...怎麼樣 這個用法來翻譯句子，整個譯文很奇怪）
- They were overshadowed by the sad news
- 這悲傷的消息使他們的歡樂蒙上了陰影
在下面翻譯中，就必須要換一種翻譯方式，採用意譯的方法
- One item overshadows every other on the agenda this week
- 這周的議程中，有一件事尤為重要（翻譯為有一件事吧其它事情遮蓋了，就太奇怪了）
- I can't have this overshadowing the evening or anything else
- 我不能讓這件事破壞了今晚的任何事
commute
a regular journey of some distance to and from your place of work
中文翻譯：通勤，坐公交車上下班 ,拿月票，但在下列句子中，如果翻譯為通勤句子就很生硬，有的翻譯為“路程”
如：
- She commutes from Cambridge to London every day
- 他每天往返於劍橋倫敦之間
- Just got to make it through this commute 《摩登家庭》
- 希望能成功到達那裡
- Well， it is a long commute from hell
- 從地獄回來確實有些路程
