今天我們接著來看第3課的“每課一句”。
一、課文原文
Lesson 3 Please send me a card
Postcards always spoil my holidays. Last summer, I went to Italy. I visited museums and sat in public gardens. A friendly waiter taught me a few words of Italian. Then he lent me a book. I read a few lines, but I did not understand a word. Every day I thought about postcards. My holidays passed quickly, but I did not send any cards to my friends. On the last day I made a big decision. I got up early and bought thirty-seven cards. I spent the whole day in my room, but I did not write a single card!

二、每課一句
Last summer, I went to Italy.
這句話乍看上去沒什麼可圈可點之處，我之所以選擇這句話來跟大家分享，主要就在於中間的逗號。
在整篇課文中，類似這句話的句子還有：
On the last day I made a big decision.
這兩句話都是以時間狀語開頭的，但卻只有第一句在時間狀語後面用逗號隔開了。
如果是從語法角度來看，第一句話也可以去掉逗號，改為：
Last summer I went to Italy.
然而，從寫作角度來看，有沒有逗號還是有差別的：
加了逗號之後，因為逗號可以起到短暫的停頓作用，從而把讀者的注意力聚焦到了後面的“I went to Italy”上。
從這個角度來看，以上第二句話的時間狀語後面也最好加上逗號，改為：
On the last day, I made a big decision.
如此一來，作者就可以讓讀者把注意力聚焦到“I made a big decision”上，從而讓讀者更加想知道作者到底做了什麼重大決定。
三、相關拓展
關於時間狀語在寫作中的用法，我在第1課的“每課一句”（每課一句：新概念第2冊第1課）中跟大家分享了下面這句話：
Last week I went to the theatre.
在這篇文章中，我是從句子尾重的角度來分析last week放在句首和句末的區別。
如果是從逗號的用法來講，這句話的last week後面其實也可以加上逗號，從而使得後面的“I went to the theatre”得以更加凸顯，試對比：
Last week I went to the theatre.
Last week, I went to the theatre.
