从语言内部来说，语句或段落都是一些意义相关的句子通过一定的承接手段合乎逻辑地组织起来的语义整体。如果一组意义相关的句子不通过一定的连接词合乎逻辑地连接起来，这组句子就难以构成篇章。
连接词是指在论文中用来说明上下句或前后句两个意思之间关系的词或词组。连接词通常用于开篇，引出扩展句；也可用于句中，尤其是用于较长的复杂句子中，以作为上下文的连接纽带；还可以用于文末或段末，用于总结上下文或结束本段内容。
有了适当的连接词能使句与句之间脉络清晰、条理自然，帮助读者理解论文的思路。
