教師節的歷史演變
在歷史上，曾經出現過兩個版本的教師節。第一個是1931年教育界人士自發組織設立、旨在呼籲改善教師待遇的“6月6日”版教師節。第二個是1939年設立的“農曆8月27日”版教師節。然而前者在當時是不予承認，後者因為戰爭等原因並未在全國推行。
1931年，教育家邰爽秋、程其保等聯絡京、滬教育界人士，在南京中央大學集會，發表要求“改善教師待遇，保障教師工作和增進教師修養”的宣言，並議定6月6日為教師節，也稱雙六節 。這個教師節沒有被承認，但在中國各地產生了一定影響。
1939年決定立孔子誕辰日8月27日為教師節，並頒發了《教師節紀念暫行辦法》，但當時未能在全國推行。
建立新中國後，曾恢復6月6日為教師節，通告各地教育工作者，可以根據實際情況自行組織慶祝活動。
1951年，商議決定把5月1日國際勞動節作為中國教師節。但由於這一天缺少教師的特點，執行的結果並不理想。特別是1957年以後，在左傾思想影響下，教師不受重視，教師節實際上已不再存在。
1985年1月，人大通過了這一議案，確定每年的9月10日為教師節。1985年9月10日，一封發出《致全國教師的信》，使得教師節正式成立。中國各地舉行隆重的慶祝大會，並在教師節期間20個省市共表彰11871個省級優秀教師集體和個人 。
1997年之前，香港的教師節定於每年的9月28日（孔子誕辰），迴歸後則跟隨中國內地規定，改為每年的9月10日。
在臺灣地區，從1952年起臺灣當局就確定9月28日為孔子誕辰日及教師節，並不隨中國大陸教師節日期的變化而改變。
為什麼會有日期爭議呢？
為教師節定在什麼日子最合適，曾求過謝冰心、葉聖陶等民進老前輩的意見。冰心建議定在每年春暖花開的時候；葉聖陶建議定在每年秋季學生入學的日子，讓學生在新學年的開始就記住教師的辛勤和光榮。最終1984年12月的“關於建立‘教師節’的報告”中建議確定每年9月10日為教師節，因為在新學年開始，新生一入學，即開展尊師活動。
從2004年開始，以提案的方式，多次呼籲以孔子誕辰作為教師節。他認為，重新設定的節日是由現代人自己擇日的，就應當考慮這日子是否有歷史文化內涵、如何接續歷史傳統。教師節應當是很有文化內涵的節日，應該延續源遠流長的歷史傳統。以孔子誕辰作為中華教師節是非常合適的。經權威部門研究測算，孔子誕生於公元前551年9月28日（陽曆），這個日子也恰當其時：新學年開始時的繁忙已經過去，可以有時間籌辦教師節和國慶節。
In order to decide on the most suitable day for Teacher's Day, CPPCC member Fang Ming asked for the opinions of Xie Bingxin, Ye Shengtao and other veterans of the People's Progressive Movement. Since 2004, Li Hanqiu, a humanist who was then a member of the CPPCC National Committee, has repeatedly called for the birth of Confucius as Teacher's Day in the form of proposals. He believes that the re-set Festival is chosen by modern people themselves, we should consider whether the day has historical and cultural connotation, how to continue the historical tradition. Teachers' day should be a festival with great cultural connotation, and it should continue the long history tradition. It is very appropriate to take Confucius's birthday as teacher's day. According to authoritative research, Confucius was born on September 28, 551 B.C. (solar calendar). This date is also appropriate: the busy beginning of the new school year has passed, and there is time to prepare for Teacher's Day and National Day.
