Today marks the 25th International Day for Biological Diversity (IDB) – a day created to promote understanding and awareness of biodiversity issues.

A hermit crab resorts to using a plastic bottle cap to protect its soft abdomen in Okinawa, Japan. Beachgoers collect the shells the crabs normally use, and leave trash behind.

To ride currents, seahorses clutch drifting seagrass or other natural debris. In the polluted waters off the Indonesian island of Sumbawa, a seahorse latched onto a plastic cotton swab.

It is a well known fact that global biodiversity is declining at an alarming rate, putting the survival of other species and our own future at risk. Global wildlife populations, a useful indicator of biodiversity, declined by 58 percent between 1970 and 2012.

The decline may reach two-thirds by 2020 – unless relevant agencies act now to reform food and energy systems and meet global commitments to address climate change, protect biodiversity and support sustainable development.

As the Earth's biodiversity faces new challenges and threats, various parties are doing their part to enhance biodiversity conservation, including the United Nations (UN), International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), and World Wildlife Fund (WWF).

What is biodiversity and why does it matter to us?

For many people living in towns and cities, wildlife is often something you watch on television. But the reality is that the air you breathe, the water you drink and the food you eat all ultimately rely on biodiversity.

Ms. Audrey Azoulay, Director-General of UNESCO, gave a message on the Occasion of the International Day for Biological Diversity.

Biodiversity includes the exceptional variety of the forms of life on Earth, as well as the natural environments where these forms developed – the ecosystems.

Biodiversity is central to our own existence, offering all nature's resources to our development.

Biodiversity, however, is not inexhaustible. Human interventions – extensive exploitation of resources, unsustainable patterns of consumption, industrial pollution causing climate change – are resulting in irreparable damage to biodiversity.

A report produced by international experts last March in Medellin, Colombia, confirmed the rapid deterioration in the state of biodiversity and underlined that the direct effects of this are already visible, such as the spread of certain diseases to humans.

She concluded with a beautiful American Indian proverb:

“We do not inherit the Earth from our ancestors; we borrow it from our children.”
