熟詞多義的意思是：一個單詞有多種意思
，如：
plant
作為名詞時，意思是：植物；
作為動詞時，意思是：種植。
再如：
bank既有“河岸”的意思，又有“儲蓄罐”的意思。
再如：
ruler既有“統治者”的意思，又有“尺子”的意思。
再如：
chest既有“胸部 front surface of a person below the neck”的意思，又有“箱子 a large strong box”的意思。
date既有“約會a social appointment”的意思，又有“棗椰子a type of fruit”的意思。
band既有“樂隊a group of musicians”的意思，又有“帶子a strip or loop to hold hair”的意思。
roll既有“小麵包a piece of bread”的意思，又有“滾動to tumble head over feet”的意思。
bowl既有“碗a rounded container that holds food”的意思，又有“保齡球a game in which a ball is rolled toward 10 pins down a lane”的意思。
can既有“罐a cylindrical container that stores food and drinks”的意思，又有“能力the ability to do something”的意思。
當我們在閱讀時，如何判斷單詞的意思呢？
我們需要根據上下文來推測單詞的意思。如bat這個單詞：
在句子The bat is a nocturnal animal.中，由後面的...is a ...animal可以推測，bat在此句中的的意思是“蝙蝠”。
而在句子The baseball bat hits the ball out of the park.中，由後面的hits the ball 可以推測，bat在此句中的的意思“球拍”。
再如tire這個單詞，大家看看tire在這兩個句子中各是什麼意思：
1.A tire is made of rubber and is filled with air.
2.I begin to tire after hours of playing outside.
在第1句A tire is made of rubber and is filled with air. 中，由後面的is made of rubber and is filled with air可以推測，tire在此句中的的意思是“輪胎”。

在第1句I used a quarter to buy a piece of gum. 中，由單詞buy 可以推測，quarter應該表示錢的含義，所以quarter在這個句子中的意思是“四分之一美元，即25美分”。
