Why China's GDP per capita is so low?

Answered Mar 10,

It is due to the currency exchange rate of RMB.

China's RMB is under-estimated. But the government won't let it appreciate too much, why?

because China is a huge country, there are a lot of industries which are equivalent to those in developed nations. But there are still a lot of low-level factories or companies, whose functionality is mainly to provide jobs.

Infrastructure: China has very good and modern infrastructure. For example, I have been to some developed nations, and I notice the 3G/4G coverage/quality is just so so. But in China, even in remote villages, mobile network coverage is still good.

Cheap local brand consumer electrical/electronic goods. Although many Chinese don't earn as much as those in developed nations. They can still afford good modern products like TV/fridge/air-conditioner/furniture, blabla. These products are with high CP value. But people from developed nations are not so well-informed about this and they have to spend a lot more on international brands. A good example is Xiaomi, or OnePlus, which have gained international recognition for high CP value. But they are rare cases, there are so many Chinese products are with high CP value but not well known in the world. So Chinese have the advantages. And a lot of industrial products are made in China, so Chinese consumers can buy them with cheaper price than other countries which have to import these products from China.

China in general is still an under-developed country. Here is a China GDP-per-Capita (nominal) map based on geographic distribution in 2014 (source: File:GDP per capita of Chinese provinces.PNG)

You can see the majority of China is very poor comparing to US, western Europe, Japan, and even eastern Europe (I believe it should be “USD” instead of “USS” in the figure above).

I am from Nanjing, belonging to the historically and still the wealthiest Yangtze delta region (Shanghai-Nanjing-Hangzhou) in China, However, our GDP per Capita (Nanjing ~ $22,000 nominal source: 2017 Top 50 Chinese Cities’ GDP nominal per capita Raw Data Compiling) is just about to match eastern Europe (Czech, Poland, Slovenia, or Portugal).

Yes of course there are other factors such as currency exchange rate, but those are minor comparing to “really being poor”.

The answer is due to China's size, and the fact the country is not developing homogeneously. Though the cities on the eastern coast are quite developed, there are still vast areas of inland China that are still poor. So basically all the exciting stuff comes from the developed part of country, and once you factor in the undeveloped part, you have this average-low number for GDP per capita.
