四六級寫作是四六級考試的第一項，時間限制在30分鐘。四級要求作文字數不低於120個詞，六級要求作文字數不低於150詞。四六級寫作的出題形式主要有提綱式，情景式，圖畫式及圖表式。掌握四六級寫作的主要題型，並分析範文寫作思路，就能摸清四六級寫作的套路了, 幫助你獲得考場頭籌。
一、提綱式作文
提綱式作文一般在題幹中列出2點到3點寫作提示，考察考生對此現象及觀點的看法進而展開討論，行文時可按照提示一一對應到各個段落。
二、情景式作文
情景式作文的題目中會限定一種身份、場景和情形，常常利用書信等應用文形式來考察考生。
例：2016年12月真題
Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write an essay .Suppose you are two options upon graduation: one is to take a job in a company and the other to go to a graduate school. You are to make a choice between the two. Write an essay to explain the reasons for your choice. You should write at least 120 words but no more than 180 words.
情景式作文，比提綱式稍難，需要自己提煉信息擬出行文段落。一般首段交代背景，表明主題及論點; 第二段用舉例論證、因果論證或對比論證的方法來證明觀點; 第三段總結結論。
遇到書信等形式時，需要注意使用應用文的標準格式。—般來說，英文書信的結構通常包括六個組成部分：信頭(heading，包括寄信人地址和日期)、信內地址(inside address，指收信人地址)、稱呼(salutation)、正文(body)、結束語(complimentary close)、簽名(signature)，有時候還包括附言(postscript〉和附件 (attachment)，一般考試中只要求包括稱呼、正文、結束語和簽名四個部分，寫作應用書信型作文時內容要直截了當，中心突出，層次分明，格式正確，語言得體。
模板：

三、圖畫式作文
圖畫式作文通常反映一個社會現象或生活哲理，要求考生根據自己對漫畫的理解來寫作。因此，要寫好四級漫畫作文，審題格外重要。考生在下筆之前要仔細看漫畫，弄清漫畫的寓意，這是文章切題的保證。
Directions部分對於考生把握作文主題有一定的提示作用，基本給出了寫作的大致方向。另外，有些圖畫或圖表旁邊或者下方會有文字提示，使考生更容易捕捉作文的主題，不容易寫"跑題"、寫"偏題"
四、圖表式作文
例：2012年12月真題
Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write a short essay entitled Education Pays based on the statistics provided in the chart below(Weekly earning of 2010). Please give a breif description of the chart firse and then make comments on it. You should write at least 120 words but no more than 180 words.
寫圖表作文時，常採用三段式的陳述方式。文章的第一段往往分析圖表中的數據變化反映什麼問題或趨勢，概述圖表所揭示的信息。第二段分析造成這一問題或趨勢的原因。第三段則展望未來的情況或提出解決問題的辦法或建議。
圖表作文裡的常見的重點詞彙：
1、圖形種類及概述法：
泛指一份數據圖表：a data graph/chart/diagram/illustration/table
餅圖：pie chart
直方圖或柱形圖：bar chart / histogram
趨勢曲線圖：line chart / curve diagram
表格圖：table
流程圖或過程圖：flow chart / sequence diagram
程序圖：processing/procedures diagram

3、圖表中的數據（Data）具體表達法
數據（Data）在某一個時間段固定不變：fixed in time
在一系列的時間段中轉變：changes over time
持續變化的data在不同情況下：
增加：increase / raise / rise / go up ……
減少：decrease / grow down / drop / fall ……
波動：fluctuate / rebound / undulate / wave ……
穩定：remain stable / stabilize / level off ……
