近日，廣州市文化廣電旅遊局、中共廣州市黃埔區委、中共廣州開發區工委、廣州市黃埔區人民政府、廣州開發區管委會發出公告，暫停舉辦第16屆廣州民俗文化節暨黃埔“波羅誕”千年廟會系列活動。
As the battle against the novel coronavirus pneumonia continues, the 16th Guangzhou Folk Culture Festival and Boluo Dan Temple Fair will be cancelled this year for safety concerns, the Administration of Culture, Radio, Television and Tourism of Guangzhou announced on 19th February.
每年農曆二月十一至十三舉辦的廣州民俗文化節暨黃埔“波羅誕”千年廟會，是嶺南地區最古老、最盛大、最具影響力的民間廟會，每屆“波羅誕”都吸引絡繹不絕的遊客到場參與，人員高度聚集。
The fair, with a history of over 1,000 years, usually falls on February 11th-13th of the lunar calendar. Nowadays it has developed into a three-day event that features a series of folk cultural performances and intangible cultural heritage of Huangpu district in Guangzhou.
公告稱，當前新冠肺炎疫情形勢仍然嚴峻複雜，根據廣東省啟動重大突發公共衛生事件一級響應的要求和全省文化旅遊系統“四個全面暫停”的部署，為堅決遏制疫情蔓延勢頭，嚴防人員聚集引發交叉感染，確保人民群眾生命安全和身體健康，經研究決定，暫停舉辦第16屆廣州民俗文化節暨黃埔“波羅誕”千年廟會系列活動。”
It is said that the Nanhai Sea God was born on February 13th of the lunar calendar. On the morning of this day, residents of the surrounding 15 villages will carry the 'statues' of the five sons of the Nanhai Sea God all the way to the Nanhai Sea God Temple amid drumbeats and perform the ritual of worshipping the sea god.
A variety of cultural shows will also be put on stage at Nanhai God Temple to celebrate the sea god's birthday, attracting citizens across the city to enjoy the culture feast.
The belief in sea god is rooted in China’s long history of sea trade. As early as 2,000 years ago in the Nanyue Kingdom, people had started trading with foreign countries via sea routes.

In 594 A.D. in Sui Dynasty, people built the Nanhai God Temple and came to worship the sea god to pray for safe sailings before they left home for sea trade. The custom of worshipping sea god was hence passed down from generations to generations.
