情態助動詞can與may
can（過去式為 could）意思“能”，表示“有能力”、“能夠 ”等
may和might表示可能。如果說話人對所說事實確信無疑，就可以用be或其他實義動詞
‘The play may begin at any moment.’ I said.
劇馬上就要開演了。可能發生
‘It may have begun already,' Susan answered.
或許已經開始了
表示可能發生的事情，但與上句的區別在於它指的是可能已經發生的事情，因此，要用"may+動詞的完成時"的結構。
‘May I have two tickets please?'I asked.
我可以要兩張票嗎？
請求別人允許或答覆時一般用 can，could，may和may的過去式 might。在這4個詞中，can最常用，也最不正式；could比can表示更 “猶豫”和客氣，通常用在不能確定請求是否會得到同意的時候；may比can和could更正式、更客氣、更恭敬；might顯得最猶豫，也最客氣 、最恭敬，但不及上述3個詞常用。
‘Can I return these two tickets?'he asked.
我可以退掉這兩張票嗎？
‘Could I have those two tickets please?'I asked.
我可以買那兩張票嗎？

Though, at first, Byrd and his men were able to take a great many photographs of the mountains that lay below, they soon ran into serious trouble.
儘管在一開始Byrd和他的人能夠拍下很多飛機下面連綿群山的照片，但他們很快就陷入了困境
在現在時和一般過去時中，can／could與 be able to通常可以互換，be able to往往用於表示學到的技能
It could only get over the mountains if it rose to 10,000 feet.
can/could有時可以用於表示可能性
只有在飛至10,000英尺的高度時，它才可能飛過這些山頭。
The plane was then able to rise and it cleared the mountains by 400 feet.
