我們來看看這個典故來歷：
19世紀後期，人們用馬車拉水(horse-drawn water cart)，而是在乾燥炎熱的夏季，像現在的灑水車一樣，噴灑塵土飛揚的道路。 當時全國開展禁酒運動的時期，人們支持關閉啤酒廠和沙龍，希望通過這一運動喚醒酗酒的丈夫和父親，根除國內酗酒這一不良風氣。
這期間，很多男人都發誓要戒酒，他們說："無論我們多麼多麼的希望來上一杯，我們寧願爬上water cart喝口水解解讒，絕不食言。"
所以：I am on the water cart. 就是指我在戒酒。（cart=wagon在美國，wagon 一詞又逐漸取代了 cart。 ）
後來，這個詞語用來形容任何讓人成癮的東西。
