realize

“understand”最常用的近義詞，就是“realize”啦！

當你已經知道某事，你可以用“realize”，相當於“知道...”：

I realize this is difficult for you. （我知道這對你很難）

當你開始知道一件事，你也可以用“realize”，相當於“意識到...”

As she was speaking I suddenly realized that we’d met before. （她說話的時候，我突然意識到我們以前見過面。）

grasp

“grasp”字面意是“抓住”，也可以表示“明白，知道”，通常用在知道了比較難懂的事情，相當於“終於明白了...”。

It was quite a high-level talk but I think I managed to grasp the main points.（那是一次很高水平的談話，我覺得我抓住了談話的要點。）
She couldn’t seem to grasp the concept.（她好像沒聽懂這個概念。）

“grasp”也可以做名詞，比如：

His grasp of grammar is very impressive for a seven-year-old.（對於一個七歲的小孩來說，他對語法的認知能力太令人欽佩了。）

get the gist

和“grasp”意思一樣的，還有一個短語“get the gist”。“gist”指的是“大意，要點”，所以“get the gist”就是指“知道了要點”。在你聽別人說話或者看別人的文章時，如果你“get the gist”，那麼就說明你知道了別人的要點，但是你記不清或者看不懂太多的細節。你花了很多心思，最終大概知道了對方說的啥。

I think I got the gist of what he was saying. （我想我大概知道他說的啥。）

make sense of

另一個表示“知道了（複雜事情的）要點”的短語是：

make sense of（弄明白，弄通）

I’ve read the paragraph three times now and I still can’t make sense of it! （這文章我讀了三遍了，我還是看不懂它寫的啥。）

appreciate

“Appreciate”也有差不多的意思。如果你“appreciate something serious“，那麼你就明白了這件嚴肅的事情或者這件事情的前因後果，相當於“領會，意識到”

I appreciate that this is a very difficult decision for you to make.（我知道，這對你來說很難抉擇。）

comprehend

之前的文章中我們說過“comprehend”和“understand”的區別，我們已經知道“comprehend”用在嚴肅、複雜的情況中。

We comprehend serious, difficult things, usually situations rather than subjects

They evidently failed to comprehend the seriousness of the threat.（他們到最後也沒認識到這個威脅的嚴重性。）

get

在平常生活的交流裡面，最常使用的表示“知道”的單詞莫過於“get”了，相信大家平常也經常使用：

I got it.（我明白了。）
Everyone’s going crazy for him. I don’t get it – what do they see in him?（大家都為他瘋狂。我不明白，他們看中他什麼？）

補充：get a joke 用來表示你get到了一個梗的笑點

別人暗示你一些事的時候，你可以回他一句“I get the message”表明你知道他暗示啥：

Oh, I get the message – you want to go without me, right? （我懂了！你不想帶我去，是吧？）

你還可以用“I get the picture

”來表面你聽懂了別人暗示你一些不好的狀況。

A: He’s not the most organized person and he can be a bit forgetful.（他不是個那麼有條理的人，而且還有點丟三落四。）
B: I get the picture. I’ve worked with people like that.（我懂的，我和那樣的人工作過。）

the penny drops

在英國，還有一個很有意思的短語“

the penny drops”，表面意思是“硬幣掉下來了”，中文的話就“水落石出”的意思，表明經過一段時間你終於懂了。

Then I saw them together at Sophie’s party and the penny dropped. I had no idea that they were a couple!（我看到他們一起去了蘇菲的聚會，這下水落石出了。我之前還不知道，原來他們是倆口子！）
