When I arrived to the United States, I didn't know a speck of English, which I had to learn for the sake of school. After we had some time here, I was changed from an English-only Elementary school (which I was doing very well) to a bilingual school.

I was placed under a strict program designed to help me learn English faster and better (it really didn't). More than anything, there were just lots of restrictions.

I stopped going to the library and instead took books from home. I remember attempting to read several classics and poetry on my own. in my third year of High School, I signed up for a program called AP (Advanced Placement) for my English class. This made my English class a very challenging and difficult one, and most students that wanted to have an above-average class merely chose another program that gave the same results for less difficult classes.

The learning material wasn't challenging either, it was just memorizing things like literary devices without any insight. We would often get tested on it by quizzes and tests every week. She would pull a passage from a book, highlight a line, and ask what example of what device was this.

I didn't see how that particular passage could have colloquialism as the passage was an extremely formal letter. There were no words that could point out a possible evidence of colloquialism.

I didn't let her ignore my question, I kept insisting after the test asking her that I didn't see how the passage used colloquialism as all the words were obviously formal. 但是其實我覺得答者學習英語的辦法我很贊同，在學習英語的過程中，如果把單詞拎出來一個一個的背寫，大多數人會不容易堅持下去，這種情況下你可以嘗試挑選一本英文原版書籍，你感興趣的小說最好了，（上亞馬遜國內網或者美國網站試著挑選），看一遍之後揣摩情節，一般大學的水平的基本能看懂小說情節大概，然後再去研習不認識的單詞，然後再回想一遍小說情節，情節就更明朗了。一部一部小說看下來，英語想不好都難。
我在大學的暑假期間，讀了一本從學姐那裡便宜買來的英文原版小說，The Minds of Billy Milligan（24個比利）。有很多詞彙也是不懂，情節是模糊揣測的，但是最終居然看完了，差不多看懂。它是美國作家丹尼爾·凱斯創作的長篇小說，是一部多重人格分裂紀實的作品。該書講述了一個真實的故事，威廉·斯坦利·米利根（比利），是美國史上第一位犯下重罪，結果卻獲判無罪的嫌犯，因為他是一位多重人格分裂者。比利的多重人格達24個之多。《24個比利》啟發了《搏擊俱樂部》《致命ID》《禁閉島》等一系列燒腦電影！電影《擁擠的房間》改編自紀實作品《24個比利》。
