Habib Fanny, Political Animal, Physician, Goofball, and All Around Nerd. Updated Sep 6, 2016

10 years ago, I was living on a meager $600/month.

I lived in a rooming house where my rent was $250. That left me $350 for living expenses.

What did I eat?

Not much fast food, interestingly enough.

Lots of ramen noodles. Very filling, very cheap.

Rice-a-Roni. Easy to make. Quick. Relatively filling.

rice-a-roni。

Chicken leg quarters bought from Save-A-Lot. I would cut those in half and have either 1 thigh or 1 drumstick per meal.

Lots of canned tuna.

Hard-boiled eggs.

Peanut butter.

Beans. Black beans, red beans, pinto beans, all beans. I ate so many beans I’m surprised there are any left on the planet.

white rice.

Yogurt.

從Save-A-Lot(美國連鎖折扣超市)購買雞腿。

Frozen mixed vegetables. Fresh vegetables? Forget it! Too expensive.

I lived next to a Domino’s Pizza. So, there would be some of that.

Raisin bran cereal and whatever cheapest yogurt I could find.

My most standard meals would be:

ramen noodles plus one chicken drumstick plus one hard-boiled egg.

hard-boiled egg, mayo, and tuna sandwich.

Occasionally, I would cook my chicken in an African peanut sauce and eat it with white rice (another of my staples).

Fried plantains. This is still one of my favorite things to eat.

yogurt with raisin bran and red grapes.

Rice-a-Roni pasta with one chicken thigh. Aah, good times.

Rice-a-Roni

When I felt like splurging, I would buy a chicken shawarma sandwich. But I would agonize over the decision: a whole $5 spent on only 1 meal… at this rate, I’d spent a whole $300 on food for the month, an unimaginably large sum.

My dream in life used to be to earn enough to go buy a chicken shawarma sandwich whenever I felt like it without having to worry about whether I could afford it or not.

Now I’m literally living the dream.

I’ve come a long, long way.

I grew up very poor. My mom would make giant pots of stews like lentils and split peas and it would last for days. Just getting thicker and thicker as the week went by

We would sandwich it between bread and butter to try and switch it up a bit.. oh by butter I mean vegetable spread. Stuff is like 25 cents a giant container

This was a typical dinner growing up… a giant pot of what she called “Goulash” and canned vegetables

We never really had fun snacks or chips or junk food these were considered luxury items. I remember spending the night at a friends house and being super excited they had snack-sized chip bags of like every variety and jello pudding and name brand soda! We only ever had RC COLA or SHASTA.

我們之前只喝過RC COLA(皇冠可樂)和 SHASTA(譯註:另一種汽水)。

We almost ALWAYS had Tampico though

Oh yeah who cares about sunny D when you got Tampico.

We use to cook tortillas on the stove top like this

Then melt butter (vegetable spread) and shake garlic salt all over it.

We drank a glass of milk with every dinner (looking back it probably helped make us feel full). But sometimes when the gallon of milk got halfway empty my mom would fill the other half with water. I hated that! Watery milk.

We always had hotdogs but never buns (we used slice bread for everything) of course packs of ramen (not the cups) fake cheese slices… basically store brand everything. We drank tap water.

My mom did her best and was really good about making it stretch. I've learned a lot from her. She knew I hated bologna and she would fry it in a pan and somehow make our sandwiches bearable. If on a Monday she made a stew we would have stew sandwiches for days and it never got old somehow. I still to this day like mayonnaise and sliced tomato sandwiches haha.

Having grown up poor in small-town America mostly during the 80’s I can offer my own perspective on this.

Mayonnaise sandwiches were a lunchtime staple.

That’s right - just mayo and white bread.

Also appearing often was Hamburger Helper of various types.

My personal favorite was Stroganoff.

Sometimes we had to scrounge in the couch cushions and under the car seats to find enough coins to pay for the pound of hamburger.

If we couldn’t find enough change…well there are ways of making it without the meat.

When I was feeling fancy I would add some garlic powder or Worcestershire sauce while I was cooking it.

Fried Spam was great when we could afford a can.

Put this on a mayo sandwich and you’re eating like a king!

Another canned meat option was potted meat.

I’m still not sure what’s in it - and I don’t want to know so please don’t be helpful in the comments!

This was most commonly eaten on saltine crackers.

For dessert Little Debbie was our best friend!

Fudge Rounds were my favorite but there was always something satisfying about unrolling a Swiss Roll and eating it layer by layer.

And when my mother was feeling ambitious and energetic baked apples with butter and cinnamon were a real treat.

**EDITED TO ADD** I never claimed I had it worse than anyone else. I simply answered the question that was asked. My family was poor when I was a child we lived in America and this is what I ate. No comparisons or competition are necessary.

And NO we did not have Ramen. I won’t respond about that any more in the comments.

Ernest W. Adams Game Design Consultant Author and Professor Answered Oct 6 2016

Over the centuries poor people around the world were traditionally thin because they couldn’t get enough food of any kind. This has now reversed in the United States with poor people having a tendency to be overweight (there are obviously many exceptions) because the cheapest food has a lot of fat carbohydrates and sugar in it. Better food costs more money. Also poor people are frequently extremely busy because they are working more than one job and so many rely on prepared foods that take less effort to cook.

Spaghetti with bottled sauce is a very inexpensive meal quick to make and it’s filling. But spaghetti is pure carbohydrate and bottled pasta sauces are made with a lot of sugar to counteract the acid in the tomatoes.

Potatoes in all their variety are very inexpensive too. Prepared oven fries are easy to make quickly:

Again lots of carbohydrates and fats.

Meat? Hamburger (ground beef) is some of the cheapest because it’s made of low-quality beef. But it’s up to 30% fat.

Prepared fish sticks are another thing that you can cook in the oven with little work. But of course they’re breaded and fried:

Looking for dessert? Candy is cheaper than fruit.

I’m not saying all poor people eat this nor that it’s all they eat by any means. Nor God forbid am I blaming anybody for anything. But the economics of food in the United States today mean that the cheapest foods are the most fattening and often have little nutritive value as well.
